Very cool video. I rode a GS on the in field portion of Daytona at bike week many years ago but have not yet ridden one for an extended period of time.

Might have to rent a GS on my next Edelweiss or Beaches tour.

I think you will be pleasantly surprised at how good a bike it is. There's quite a difference between my 2006 and the 2010, especially the suspension. I expect the new one to be even better.

Thinking that you would take a $20,000+ motorcycle and thrash it off road is a little hard to fathom. Yeah they show the engineers putting it through it's paces, but they don't give a crap if they dump it, they will just take it back to the factory and bolt up some new stuff. There are certainly better choices if you really want to rip it up off-road, and if you are only going to ride it on the road there are better choices for sure. I get the appeal though.

I rode my mountain bike on the road yesterday, it was nice to be in the upright position and not be worried about gravel in the turns, but my average speed (13mph) was pretty far off what I would normally do on a road bike, but that was what I was looking for.

It seems to me the GS is really about slowing down and enjoying the scenery, and if you have the opportunity to take a dirt road you do it. Perhaps I will get there someday, but for now I would rather keep my dirt and pavement machines separate and focused.

Not just about off-road shred. Take a twisty ride on a new one with ESA and see whatcha think. It won't run with your bike, but it will surprise you.

As Bob said, the GS is a phenomenal bike for the twisties. I bought the Replika in the fall of 03, and then rented a GS in Europe the following summer. Had I not bought the S yet, I would have bought the GS, bikes are great all around bikes, and the Tourance/Anakee tires let you grind pegs as much as the sport tires on the S.

I remember when Boston Andrew bought his GS and when we meet up for one of the WS tours, he said he was not use to it, so would probably be a little slower than he was on his S. I knew better, and when we rode one of the nice little gems in VT, sure enough he was faster than before.

Same at the KTM track day at mid Ohio, I started our on the RC8R, and RC8's , then got on the SMR (supermoto), I was MUCH faster and had way more fun on the 990 SMR, than on the 1080 race bike. The position, wide bars, and stability make you very comfortable, and when you are comfortable, and confident, you ride faster.

I am really looking forward to tearing up the twsties on the F800GS, and interested to see if I can get more than 2500 miles out of a set of tires

Should be a fun summer.

I think you'd be surprised how fast a GS is in the sub 60ish mph twisties. I've ridden with really good riders on my HP2 that were on GS's. Now in Tx the HP2 is king due to our high speeds, but in the slow stuff it gets stomped unless there is some striaghtaway. Don't believe me, bring the HP2 down to NC and ride with Dee and Lackey.*

*your results may very as I'm not that good of a rider and they are much more talented... but still.

But in all seriousness the GS is a helluva bike, I love mine for what it is and am glad I got the DOHC engine, but that water cooled bike sure is sweet.

Thanks for the link Ron!
