First Iron Butt
Took the RT out on a great ride. Buddy and I went Houston to Dallas, met up with 6 other riders, traveled to Tail of the Dragon, dropped down to Daytona Beach for Bike Week, and then did the Iron Butt back to Houston. Did 1,049 miles in 18 hours back home. Total miles rode was 3,326 in seven days with two days in Daytona very minimal.
Thank goodness for heated jacket liner and gloves. Temps for the first two days were upper 20s in the morning with highs just in mid-30s. Burr. Iron Butt ride temps were in the 50s (perfect for something like this) but big rain for 100 miles through Alabama. Crossing the Mobile I-10 bridge in heavy winds and rain created a pucker factor. Wore rain suit bottoms but surprising TourMaster boots with lots of mink oil boots/gloves and an old Joe Rocket Meteor textile jacket kept me fairly dry. Group consisted of 4 BMW (RT, 2 GSA, and K1600) and four Big Twin Harleys. Wonder why the BMWs lead all the way through Tail of the Dragon and surrounding areas? Not sure if I would do on my S bike but have done a few 500 mile days on it. Nice start to 2013 riding. Nathan Houston, Texas |

The Army always keeps the tanks in the rear and lets the SpecOps take the tip of the spear. I guess thats why the Harley's were in the rear on US 129. That really not "tank terrain." lol
