Side stand too short?

I just got what I believe is a 2004 BC Prep (no center stand, no ABS, yellow spring on rear shock). When it's on side stand, it leans way over than I'm used to.

I measured the side stand to be ~11" from the pivoting point to the middle of the pad that's touching the ground. Is this the right length? Seems it'll be much better if it were 1" longer. Just trying to make sure it is the right part. Thanks.

Not sure if there are two or three different lengths,11" is longer than what comes on a stock bike thats the SS length, plus has the rear been raised that also effects the angle of lean.

I think the rear is stock, meaning nothing has been done to it. But I did read Prep is suppose to be taller in the rear. I can imagine that if BMW uses the same side stand for all R1100S then Prep will lean further. Just want to confirm that is the case.

I have a 01' light with the stock yellow rear spring set up. The kick stand is 11" stock. It does have quite a bit of lean to it.

Wouldn't hurt to check the pivot bolt to make sure it's properly engaged and tight.

There are two side stands. Regular one's about 10.5 inches and the Prep BCRs have an 11 inch stand. (If any one wants a stock stand (about 10.5 inches), I've got one). The 11 incher still has my BCR leaning way over so I just glued about 1/2 inch of tire rubber under the pad. Inelegent but functional.

Good idea, I may try that, thanks!

I'll bet you have a shorter than stock rear torque arm..make a big difference in rear wheel height. My BMW guru says changing the rear arm doesn't do much anyway.

It's normal. I have longer shocks both in the rear and front and the short paralever and it leans a lot. But the stand is strong and the bike never tipped over even when I had parked on an incline.

There is a tall sidestand available for the BMW R1100S (used on the BCR) if you are still concerned after hearing this dialogue. The bike will take a dump while on the sidestand if you have it loaded for a camping trip. Chances are if you have a center stand, it doesn't work either.

I agree strong, I regularly grab the bars and the bag mounts and tip it up on the stand and spin it around in place, dirt bike style. Best way to turn it around.

But they can tip over, I did it on Main street in Saluda (by Bubba's summer place).

Good slope on the S side of the road, and I stopped at a bakery to get breakfast, and some extra sweets for a snack later. I opened the RH bag and placed the sweets in the bag, and by habit I took my knee to push the bag closed while I pushed on the latch down, well..........in slow motion it rolled up and over the stand as I tried to grab something to counter weight it, to no success.

No clapping, probably some laughing from the businesses across the street. Some woman in an SUV stopped to help me pick it up, I actually had to tip it over further to retract the side stand, as it was blocking me from lifting it. It did not help the CF cyl cover for sure.

I remember I had my old 2000 R1100s parked in a Telluride alley one morning after an all night rainstorm and it still was drizzling and gloomy that am. Unfortunately it was normally a dirt alley, and I started the bike to warm up, turned around to put on my backpack and helmet, and then turned back just in time to watch the kickstand sink into the mud until the bike was laying on it's side just putting away in the rain. Pain in the butt to pick up because the wheels kept slipping.

Just a story for the kickstand thread!

Get a hockey puck and drill two or three holes in the side stand foot. Bolt it to the bottom with SS machine screws and thread lock the nuts down. That will add about an extra inch to the side stand, it doesn't slip, and looks fine. I've done that to both of the GS's I've owned.

Bad-ass idea and they come in colors too! Bright pink maybe.

not so sure i'd want to be dragging/grinding a hockey puck in the corners...eventually someone might yell "goal" when that thing lifts the rear wheel in a corner and skitters you off into the tundra.

but then again...if it comes in bright pink....maybe.

Yeah, a knee puck would be better suited for this application.
