ridiculous, it's like a reusable band aid! How likely do you think it is to get crap on the wrong side of the filter media when you are cleaning it? So you have the worlds most expensive filter that ends up being worse than a paper unit that lets you throw the crap you don't want in your motor away.
This reminds me of the lively discussions about how the aftermarket airfilters flow so much more air and improve performance, but there is no restriction with the paper units, which can be easily proven by doing back to back runs with and without the filter in place, which will show little to no difference. BMW designed the engines, and the filters to go with them, that seems good enough for me.

For some reason when I clicked this thread I was expecting to see something that used toilet paper.

Steel and steel mesh. Notice there is no weight associated with it, lol.

I do remember the toilet paper oil filters. Had a friend in High School that added such a filter to his Camaro. Last I heard from a mutual friend he still had the Camaro so it must have worked? Or, perhaps an engine rebuild or two along the way. That was back in the late 70's...

Similar filters are used on turbine engines. You have to adhere to the cleaning procedures and we had a kit to clean it to ensure no nasty bits get on the wrong side. So if you buy the filter kit get the cleaning kit.

Why waste your time & money for a gimmick?
You're engine is only an engine, like a tractor engine. It doesn't need much. I've still got like five oil filters sitting here for a r1200s...

Gimmick? McDonalds has been using steel mesh to strain oil for years.
Would you like fries with that?

I bought years ago at Grand Junction Harley / BMW / KTM. I have no idea what I paid. I'd just make a point of picking parts up whenever I was over there.
I see Beemer Boneyard has 8 packs for $89 of Mann filters.. 8 Pack Of New Mann Oil Filters W/O Crush Washer For All R1200,GS/ RT/ ST/ S/ R, K1200S/ R/ GT (2005 On) , F800/650 (Twins), K1600GT/GTL & S1000RR Bikes & F650GS twins (2009 on).

So 8 for $89 or I permanent one for $149 + cleaning kit. It is a tough choice.
But either way, I get to add the oil I want. I'd bet the steel filter lasts longer than the 8, or 16.

8 filters will outlast your ownership of the bike or your riding career.
16 for sure. For about the same price as the high falootin' medical metal device... It's not a tough decision, unless you just like gadgets...

Rats, I just inventoried my filters...
I have five r1200s, six r1100s, two f650gs filters, two Harley filters, but NO f800GS filters.... Arg. All that planning too! I have a lot of bullets though! In my bullet inventory... I could get one of those, then keep the insert out of it to achieve better flow...

I once ordered a bunch of filters from Parts-Unlimited, for the R1200 and the R1100 and some of them said HD on them... I called and they said, same filter, same thread, same price... Works for me! Now I just keep 2 or 3 on hand.
