Just some praise for the R1100

Just a bit of praise for this great machine. I don't post here much (read all the time). I've had my 2000 R1100s for 7 years. It was with another owner for the first 6 of its life and he only put 13,000 on it. It is up to 42,000 miles now, and I swear it is running better than ever.

I joke that the engine is finally broken in. It stopped burning oil around the 38,000 mark (I joke not - it would slurp down a quart every 3000 miles, but now it is using at a rate of about 1/4 cup every 1K).

The thing just absolutely purrs at 4,700 RPM on the highway (plenty fast for a nice ticket here in Ohio), and the shifts are nice and smooth between 5K and 6.4K.

Yes, I know I replaced some bearings in the rear last summer, and my second fuel filter replacement (I hate that job) is coming up. And I also haven't changed out my alternator belt (the new one is in my closet - I guess I'll do it this summer - but the original still looks good). Oh - and I think my brake lines need to be refreshed replaced soon...

But it's been running so well these last 2 or 3 thousand miles that i don't even want to do my valve adjustment (it's only a few hundred overdue).

Two years ago this was my "2nd favorite bike of all time" (in first place was my 1990s Kawi GPZ 11100 - what a bike that was - still regret selling it). I think the R1100 has now moved into first place.

I have to work less and ride more!

Tom

Great Bike

I just sold my Ducati 900ss that I have had since new in 1992. I have had my R1100s for almost 2 years now. I felt very soon after I bought the BMW that it was everything I wished my Ducati was. The handling of the Ducati was a joy on the backroads. The R1100s is just as joyful to me even though they handle differently. I like you, feel my BMW seems to run better all the time. The oil consumption just slowed down tremendously in the last 1,000 miles. I have 24,000 miles on it now. The motor just seems to feel happy at times. I love that.
I feel this is the best bike I have every owned in 43 years of riding motorcycles.

Totally agree with both of you. I have owned my 2005 1100s for nine years, bought in new, and love it more now than I did when I bought it. I never do that with anything. I have owned alot of bikes in the last 30 years, german, spanish the big 4 of japan, and i have never loved a bike like this one.

Be safe,
Lane

It's the feel of a boxer twin engine I tell you. It just makes you happy.

But I have to tell you when I get on my R1200RT after riding the S, the engine feel is even better. Balance shaft, you know. The handling of course not so much.

Funny seeing this post,I still have my 1100s or be it under a dust sheet, still with a list as long as your arm of upgrade mods still to do,having recently ridden to Assen on my K I'd have probably done it just as quick on the 1100 because of having a bigger tank and having to stop for fuel.

It'll still cruise at 100mph two up ,where it gets complicated the S can be less than stimulating and you will see allsorts of comments about folk selling but few about such, having ridden on my K with both an 1100 and a 1200 in the real world of speed restrictions traffic lights and other road users despite all the tosh you read their the one's waiting for me I'm the one out of fuel on the K!!,the K can be rather stimulating at 6 thousand and up,but boy you've got to go a long way at 170+ to put any serious ground into an 1100s,and of course despite posts about1200 you can get people on an 1100!!!

Don't wait on the brake lines if they're originals. My 99 developed a pin hole leak at the lever 3-4 years ago that wrecked some plastic before I could get it wiped off and back home. No warning.

I replaced with Speiglers that match my Ohlins.

I have 85,000 on my 99 S. I put the last 80K on her. In all of those miles, it NEVER let me down once and no failures of any kind. I took good care of it, but even among R11S's, that is exceptional.

I've ridden Ducati SS & 916's, they are fun, but when I get back on my S, it feels so much more comfy and refined.

Even after 12 yr of ownership, I still love the looks of this bike.
