Oil leaking from swingarm

Hiya,

I've got oil leaking a bit from (I think) the rubber boot bit at the end of the swingarm. On a scale of 1-5, 1 being "ignore it" and 5 being "don't ride it anywhere except a dealer", how bad is that?

I had a very slow "weeping" leak for a long time. I finally replaced the pinion seal when i did the pivot bearings at 50k. I rate my leak as a 1.

Pinion seal is fairly common. Pull the boot loose and verify where it is coming from. keep an eye on the final drive oil level until you get it fixed.

How do you do that? Maybe possible on a R1100S but no can do as far as I know on a R1200S.

My vote is also for the pinion seal. Cyndy's '04 did the same thing. I replaced the transmission output seal and it obviously didn't help. Did it twice, actually, thinking the first one may have gotten cut on the splines on the way in the first time.
Nope. Pinion seal.

Just replaced a trans output seal on a R1150GS. My S had both the trans and pinion seals fail. If there is oil only in the boot and not forward up in the swing-arm then it is probable the pinion.

Wipe it and watch it. If it's dripping on the garage floor you should probably do something about it. If it's just making the bottom of the boot a little damp I'd leave it alone.

Hi all,
Yes, a R1100S.
It dripped a bit on the garage floor after coming back from a ride but not much after that. I have to take it in for the 12,000 mile tune up and annual so I'll get them to check it out.

When mine was doing it I put UV tracer in either the trans or fd to make sure I wasn't fixing the wrong problem.

It was the fd so I removed it and handed it off to a BMW repair with the jig to be rebuilt. $250 in parts and $250 in labor.

If it is the FD seal then you can replace it yourself for a lot less $$$ vs. what a shop will charge. Here is a link to some photos-

Driveshaft and more love.
