Idle Problem
2003 BCR with 46000 miles
Returning home from a 1500 mile trip with about 124 miles on the tank of gas and 30 miles from home I started to loose power. I was traveling at about 70 mph and the bike began to bog down. Down shifted and continued to loose power. Pulled off the road and the bike died. I was able to restart but had to hold about 1/4 throttle to keep it running. Loaded the bike up and hauled it home. First thought was bad fuel or water. The fuel pump does prime when the key is turned on . 1. Checked for missing or cracked vacuum plugs on the TB 2. Drained the gas and replaced the fuel filter. Thought about replacing the fuel pump while it was apart but it does prime when the key is turned on. Not sure how to test or if the bike would run at all with a bad pump? 3. TB cables not displaced 4. Checked valves ( in spec.) and replaced plugs. Left side looked lean(white) compared to the right (brown). After the above was done the bike still will not idle below 2K. The local shop cannot get it in for service unitl 8/20. Any obvious things I missed or that could be checked. Suggestions would be appreciated Thanks |
There is a thread that will tell you to pull the injectors and test the spray pattern and amount. Also, fuel pump output pressure.
|
My first thought would have been fuel filter. My second thought is a cracked fuel line in the tank.
|
Thanks,
Pulled it apart again and no cracked lines in the tank. I looked through the threads on the injectors. Not sure how to test the pressure and spray pattern or amount. |
I would do a compression check to eliminate the mechanics,
measure the fuel pressure. likely a systemic failure as it will idle and run on one cylinder. your plugs should be the same color but that could be a throttle balance issue but unlikely to cause this problem. make certain both throttle cables are fully seated and both throttles are closing and opening. fully at the same time. |
Add Gasoline to tank?
|
How was the oil level? Have been a couple instances where oil level was too low, cylinders scuffed and lost compression.
|
Virtually no compression on the right cylinder and 120 on the left. Leak down test is bad. Oil level was between 1/4 to 1/2 in the sight glass.
Things aren't looking good. Thanks again for you input |
there are some cylinders and heads on ebay right now.
|
|
Wow.. unusual.
|
wow wouldn't have expected that.
fyi, my compression 210/207 so your 120 reading could be a problem as well. |

Calculation suggests that the mathematical max for our 11.3:1 cr should be: AP x CR x VE = CP 14.7 x 11.3 x 1.15 = 191.02 psi and that's at sea level on a good day. |
plus carbon but of course just a analog meter.
but even the rt motor will be around 170 |
I thought the 120 was on the low side also . The plan is new rings and 4 exhaust valves while it is apart.
|
Ive worked on a dozen high mileage bikes the rings never seemed to be the issue.
usually valves. the used heads off ebay will be much cheaper than the new valves etc. but it would be nice to have fresh heads probably replace the guides as well. |
