Ride Report Cairns to Cape York
Last year I decided that for my 40th birthday it might be nice to take a relaxing holiday to the most northern point of Australia, Cape York Peninsula . It's approx. 1350 kms from Cairns but with some local knowledge from our tour guides we managed to add to that distance a bit by taking the back roads. I flew to Cairns with a good mate and we set off on a 8 day tour through North Oz
![]() The first day was spent heading through the tracks leading through the mountains from Cairns up to the Daintree Rain forest ![]() ![]()

We spent the first night at PJ's backpackers
![]() wondering if the rain would let up and allow us to take the short route through the croc infested Bloomfield river at Wujal Wujal ![]() The group decided to test fate and forge ahead, the previous day the Bloomfield was impassable but no such problems for us ![]() Then some fun single tracks before arriving at the Lion's Den Hotel for night 2 ![]() ![]()

Day 3 would see us putting in some big km's stopping briefly to check out some of the interesting sites,
![]() ![]() along the way up past Cooktown where James Cook beached his ship the Endeavor for repairs ![]() ![]()

A brief stop for lunch as we leave the lush forests of the coast and head inland to the red dust of outback Australia.

Keep posting. There's a pot-load of history up north of where you went. Did you stay close to the coast?

After a good nights sleep we forged ahead through the bush amazed by this country, so dry and dusty but when you find a billabong (watering hole) you can't help but be amazed at the increase in life and colour
![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Pity not all the wildlife is pleasing to the eye

Hi Nail
Cairns and the Daintree are both on the coast and eventually we made it to the coast right at the tip

Soon we found some termite mounds
![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() and a station to refuel the bikes and our bodies. These station outposts consist of 1 or 2 houses and then nothing for 100's of Km's. In times past this would have been a very welcome site for travellers ![]() ![]()

The termite mounds started getting bigger,
![]() ![]() and the landscape started to change again, more river crossings and undulating countryside. Another group of bikers caught up to us here and a guy on his XR dropped it in the river and flooded the bike. We helped him get it started and they rode with us for the next 2 days ![]() ![]()

The outback stations have fuel but you need to have support to meet you at various junctions or you won't make it especially with standard fuel tanks. I did this as part of a tour and all our gear went on ahead so we didn't have to bother carrying the gear, just have fun.
I'll try and post the rest of the trip tomorrow

I just checked out the Wenlock River! How long is it? Where did you cross it? What is really amazing is that I'm carrying on a conversation with a mate on the other side of the world!

I have a spare room, and lots of great roads Jeff. Jersey is only 20 hours away.

My wife is really jones-ing for a break from work and wants to do an 13 day Edelweiss tour in Australia. I think this particular tour spends two days at Philip Island for the Aussie GP.
Does anyone have experience with this particular tour package or the Aus GP? Is Philip Island a good track for spectators?
