Damaged BST Wheel repaired

Hi,

I hit a rock hard in California. Was railing very close behind another guy on a left turn in a canyon. The right side hit a rock (that I did not see but sure felt). The lip of the rim cracked and was mushroomed and deformed a bit. Fortunately a world renowned carbon repair place is in my home town. For an extremely reasonable price he fixed it. Had to build molds and do his thing. Its slightly thicker than before in the damaged area on the outside only by design.

I know, faked up there. Sorry. Just imagine a crack, a bulge, and a fat area that shouldn't be there. All of it was on the lip of the rim beyond the bead area.

I wouldn't trust a carbon fiber wheel after such a shock. Replace is the only (expensive) solution.
I have seen bicycle front forks catastrophically desintegrate after even mild shocks, and I mean desintegrate not like a slowly developing crack like you get in metal.

My BST wheels are fine, except they shine a little more than the flat CF on the body. So do the HP cylinder covers.

If Rob told me its fixed, in my mind its fixed. He's been doing this since 1989. The tire was near new at the time and I rode it about 5000KM's before taking it off for repair. It was just the lip beyond the bead. I have zero concerns.

It's cool that you found a local dude to fix it and it looks like he did a fine job at least cosmetically. did you consider sending it back to BST and letting them check it out? since they understand the build up they may have a better thought of any unseen damage, and maybe they have some x-ray type technique to evaluate "challenged" wheels.

I don't think there is anything to worry about though

I didn't. I knew about Robert's from previous experience so that just was a natural progression. He was impressed with the workmanship on the wheel and starting pointing out the various construction techniques BST used and said they did it right.
