6" wheel 1200

The fatter rear wheel on the R1200s looks pretty cool. Have any of you managed to swap from the 5.5 to the 6" wheel with major handling improvement. Is it a
plug an play swap or do certain mods need to be made?

Should be a straight swap, but I'd switch to the /55 tire as well as the standard /50 will probably worsen the handling on a 6" rim instead of improve it.

narrow tire generally has quicker turn in, wider is not always better as Brad illustrated.

I had a comment about traction but I think I should just let it go.

I was actually planning on installing the wider rim and the stock tire that BMW put on it.

Anybody know where to get a wide wheel? I tried at Max Motorcycles and other dealers but its not even listed.

Brad great pictures had a good laugh.

Rique,

There is another set of part numbers, I have no idea why there are two.

ohlins are a good choice, but why the rear first?

the front hits stuff before the rear finds out about it.

if you're only buying one...

There are two sets of part numbers because the wheels are directional as indicated by the little arrow on the rim and BMW switches the swing arm from the left to the right side on various bikes.

I know this because I purchased an HP forged rear for my R1200S and the dealer was uncertain. If I am not mistaken K-bikes have the swing arm on the left side.

Thanks for heads up. It would majorly piss me off to get the wrong sided wheel all the way down hear!

The rear shock change on my S1000RR was the most dramatic change I felt when doing the swap. Rear wheel just dug in and traction was amazing. Not that the fronts are also fantastic but its just a first impression I got.

Rique you're comparing a top shelf Ohlins fork to a second tier front shock, not the same as rear shock to rear shock. The effect of an Ohlins shock up front would probably be more dramatic than in the rear. I nearly had my Sachs rear shock set up as well as the Ohlins I replaced it with on my Aprilia Mille. I was actually surprised there wasn't a bigger difference when I installed the Ohlins. However when I replaced the front stocker with an Ohlins on my 1100s it was night & day difference all to the better.

Well, we are talking very different bikes. The effect I mention is not just my crazy idea. Its consensus across the S1000RR forum. You see the stock fronts on the
S1000RR are pretty good.

I agree on the 1000rr the rear shock would make a big difference as it already has an "A" grade fork but on the 12s I think the biggest difference would be with a front shock swap instead of a rear. With the stock front shock on the 11s it was harsh & would bottom out on big hits, the Ohlins eliminated both the harshness & bottoming in front plus added better tracking. Just my opinion of course but if I could only afford one at a time I'd start in front.

I´ll take your advice when it comes to shock order. I´m getting a rear wheel from a member on this forum so I guess the Ohlins will have to wait a bit. Cheers.
