Loss of power over 4000 RPM
I have been following a thread of these people's multi year adventure.
Fellow's R1200 GS (besides have sprung a rear seal or some such leak) is having a loss of power over 4000 RPM. Currently in Russia.. Any ideas? RideDOT.com - Ride the World! index

are both cylinders running over 4k? is it spitting, bogging, stuttering?
sounds like fuel or air, so possibly the fuel pump. when was the last time he shoveled out the air box? any foreign bodies stuck somewhere in the intake system? verify fuel and air, then move on to things like coils, plugs and other electrical mystery parts that won't show their hand.

coils, easy to check just unplug each of the plugs one at a time and make certian.
any air or exhaust restrictions, fuel supply, measure the pressure. |

Turns out this fellow limped the bike for awhile and then finally took it to a BMW dealer in Estonia. They said he needed a new ECU so he waited a week for it. Then:
The BMW dealership e-mails me to let me know that the ECU came in from Germany. But when they installed it, it turned out that it wasn't the ECU that was the problem. It was a faulty ignition coil. Which is what I originally thought. But I don't know how to say, "I told you so" in Estonian, so I just authorize the repair. At least it's going to save me close to $700, the difference between the ECU and an ignition coil. Good call Viggen, Brentw1.

For all he is 12 :
The side spark plugs firing only to about 4500 1 / min , after which they are switched off . Because they turn off at 4500 1 / min , one notices an error to the primary coil only at these speeds . Since it ignites just no longer reliable ( in extreme cases not at all) on the affected cylinder . The power loss is therefore ( almost ) nothing to do with the failure of a spark plug but with the fact that on this cylinder ( in the transition period ) temporarily nothing ignites . Normally, one notices to 4,500 1 / min ( almost ) nothing from the failure of the primary coil . |
