R1200S Factory Heated Grips - Patching up
Hi,
I'm down to the 'canvas' on my R1200s throttle grip. It seems you can only buy a 'whole' replacement from BMW. I've also been warned that replacing the whole unit is a little tricky with there being a real danger of breaking the wires. I'm wondering about cutting off the rest of the worn rubber and trying to slip on another rubber grip. I'm also toying with the idea of using something like a silicone tape (X Treme Tape - Extreme Tape - Silicone Tape - High Temp Tape - Rubber Tape - Compression tape). Anyone got any experience with replacing the heated grips? Thanks Adrian |
Hi,
My grips also wore down to expose the wires and I fitted these http://www.sportouring.com/SPpageimages/grippuppies/grip-puppies-new-web-header.jpg Job sorted with good results. Peter. |
Hi Peter,
Did you cut off th old rubber first? Or just slip them on? Looks like a better solution than my fetish tape. Thanks Adrian |
Hi,
I just read the bumpf and I can see they will fit over what is left and they are good for heated grips too. I just ordered two pairs as the poor old R11S is in need of a pair - and it vibrates more. Might need a pair for the K1 vibrator too - if I ever put enough miles on it. Thanks Adrian |

Hi RB,
Is that an R1100S theme? I read through a bit and started to get an R11S vibe - my R11S doesn't have heated grips cause I was younger then ('99) and heated grips was for poofs. As an older-person I got the R12S with heated grips and they have worn off just where your thumb grips under the 'glans' of the throttle grip due to what I can only conclude is excessive use. I've ordered the puppy things now, so I'll post some info on how they work out for someone with a size 9.5 hand. Thanks Adrian |
Every so often I stumble onto something simple that solves the problem much better than I expected.
The grips on my '04 S were worn down to ratty nothingness by the PO but the heaters still functioned. On this model the heating elements are bonded within the grip's rubber so you have to replace everything. BMW wants over $250 for a set. Hmmm. A little looking found Wilson Shock Shield Hybrid Tennis Racquet Grip. "Ideal for players with arm discomfort - a gel layer reduces uncomfortable vibrations and shock - hybrid of tacky PU and IsoZorb Gel.". IsoZorb indeed! I bought two and wrapped them over the worn grips. I wrapped from the center out and safety wired the last wrap.
All in all, better than any other handlebar grip I've used. |
Brilliant solution! Wish I done that home work before buying the factory replacements.

Ive been using these on my worn out Oxford Heated Grips. They even come ribbed for your pleasure!!

Yes, that was a R1100S thread but the 1200 might work the same way.
You can buy a set of two stock 1100 grips here- BeemerShop BMW Heated Grips Replacement Set Here is a good thread with R1100S photos in post #18 and R1200S photos in #30- http://forums.pelicanparts.com/bmw-r1100s-r1200s-tech-forum/251312-grips.html |
