Throttle cable/distrib. box inspection

I need some advice. It's about time for me to start putting my bike back together. While I have the tank off, the DME displaced, and have all that great access, I was thinking that I should look over the innards of the throttle cable distribution box. Is this a good idea or a bad one? Does it look like the insides of a Rolex?

What should one look for when inspecting the throttle cables?

Mine feel pretty good. No odd noises or binding. Throttles return with a snap and seem to operate very smoothly. I did notice that when the left TB bellcrank is against its mechanical stop there is a small gap at the right TB, maybe .050". I know that throttle sync is the important issue, I pointed this out as a FWIW sort of thing.

Should I just leave it alone? Does this require any sort of lubrication?

TIA

The Bowden box can be a bit intimidating to some. Go for it if you are handy and patient. Mine had some sand inside, I cleaned and lubed with graphite powder. Oil/grease will only attract and hold the dirt. Check your cable up at the throttle handle, that's where mine started to fray.
Cheers

You could replace the throttle with the new improved version. Requires kit of parts at handgrip as well.

They change the upper throttle cable at one point. that required a change to the handlebar assembly. You can see it on the MaxBMW fiche. Section 32, diagram 32-0965. You can't buy an old throttle cable any more, so you need all the new parts if you want to change your upper cable.

It's not a huge project. it might be a good idea to get it done if you're looking for something to do in the garage.

I replaced my cables at 50K. To tell you the truth, there was nothing wrong with the ones in there, I just thought it would be prudent. If I had to do over, I'd left them alone. The ordinal ones look pretty good. Just my 2 cents.

In some instances the original throttle configuration could see the cable wearing into the plastic. The new cable makes the 90 degree turn inside a metal tube that's part of the cable itself.
