Do you think we should do something for Jeff Williams?

as most of you know, we lost jeff williams back in april.
many of you rode with him, almost all of you knew him through his posts on this board.

there was a memorial ride put on by wheelie boy (jeff) a while back, and it bugs me that i missed it...which got me thinking.

years ago we, as a poorly unorganized group (at times), passed around a rear cowl as a tribute to another friend, shannon, who also passed. jeff was one of the guys that kept that project rolling.

the cowl went around the USA and other countries, and was signed by riders who took photos and wrote in a journal (hey, we were dinosaurs back then).

i'm wondering if there's enough interest in passing around a cowl for Jeff Williams, so that those who rode with him could do it once more.

it would also create a situation for those who didn't get the chance to ride and hang with jeff to finally do so. he always loved riding with new friends.

what do you guys think?

I am certainly interested. The rides I did with Jeff inspired me to move to that area in retirement (someday). He was a big part of that thought process.

Is there an ultimate destination for the cowl, or is it the journey it takes that is the focus?

Thanks for stepping up with the thought,
Richard

Brad, nice idea and I would definitely participate. I do think there are a lot fewer folks around these days, so there may be some pretty big geographic gaps in moving the cowl around.

If it goes north then I can get it as far east as Colorado.

Would be welcome in Ohio....

Glad to put it on the back in memory of a man that gave so much....

Distance is relative, but time more of a concern to us in the Northeast... I will not speak for others, but my riding days are very numbered if not finished till Spring.

I'd be more than happy to take it down to Key West. Jeff sold me the A-arm that ended up on Shreddr's R12+S and then he agreed to be the moderator of the S1000RR forum when the HP2Sport was merged into the R11/12S forum. We did some emails back and forth getting it set for him to be the moderator. I have great respect for Jeff. Although I could never have kept pace with him, I know that he was a gentleman.

as far as "time", it's not an issue. i think shannon's cowl took almost three years to tour the globe. it's all about the ride.

here's a 35 pager from the shannon cowl:
NunBetter Memorial Ride

as far as the cowl, it'd be awesome if we could either borrow or purchase/replace the actual cowl from jeff's bcr.

i think we'd also need a small backpack so those without an r1100s could ride with it.
a simple point/click camera would complete the kit, so everyone could shoot pics of the cowl's advancements/adventures.

i know it needs to go around the usa, canada and at the very least, over to chris canning in england and probably take a lap with those guys up in windmill/tulip land.

anybody else interested, or have suggestions on how we can put this together?

Although I never had the pleasure of riding with Jeff, I'm in. The question occurs how this would happen in light of how we did it for Shannon, where-in it was an R1100S thing, which means we mounted the cowl on our R1100S's to ride and meet the next guy, camera in hand for the hand off. (I liked seeing the posted pix of these transfers....added to the sense of community.)
But, we've gotten so bike diverse lately that would be hard to do, so what cowl would we use? Another R11S cowl or a piece from Jeff's bike or ????
Great idea that needs a bit of logistics definition.

I would be in too. Although this board passes itself off as a technical board, which it does serve, like most it has turned into a social board, of people with a similar passion for life and riding that jut happened to at one time own a specific model.

I have had the privilege to meet and ride with many of the regular payers and meet my first pelican (Dan Alexander) because of the Shannon cowl. In essence that is what people like Shannon and Jeff did, they spread the enthusiasm and promoted the comradery of the group.

So it is only fitting that something be done again, to carry on their passion even after their passing.

I like this idea. Has his BCR been sold yet? We could always chip in to replace the cowl on his BCR and use the original one for the ride.

Brad- I don't think you should sign the cowl. Just whack it with your knee puck, K?

In that case, Steve... we should take a front fairing!

Last I heard there were two potential buyers lined up. I don't know if Heidi signed off on either one of their offers though. In any case, if the intent is to send Jeff's BCR's cowl on a worldwide tour someone ought to ping Scott...

scott says the bike is still for sale.

you're up Sergio. you've been involuntarily volunteered to contact Heidi and see if we can beg, borrow or buy/replace that cowl.
we'll probably also be passing the hat around for a small backpack and if steve carlton can't steal one, a small point and shoot camera.

another question:
i know some of you guys like to mount the cowl as a trophy, and present it to the family, but from experience, that rarely gets the reaction you're looking for.

i'd like to suggest that once the cowl is done with it's journey, that it be returned to whoever currently has jeff's bike, and be reunited with the rest of his boxer cup rep.
