Cleaning inside of the front light unit

hello guys!

before reassembling my R1100S boxercup I wanted to clean the inside of the front headlight unit.

Does anybode have an idea how to do so?

The headlight unit itsel is like sealed together with glue?

Greetings
Gilles from Belgium

The pieces are glued together and it is quite difficult to get them apart (and there is always a risk of damage).

The procedure in principle is the same as for BMW car headlights. A description - although in German - is here http://www.insideperformance.de/images/produkte/angeleyes/einbauanleitung-insideperformance_öffnen_verklebter_scheinwerfer.p df

Do not attempt to use a heatgun!

Heat up your oven to 60-80 degrees. Put your headlamp in the oven and heat for about 5 minutes. Take out with a towel (the headlamp should be hot when touching and not just "warm") and work your self along the glue slowly separating the 2 parts. Bend open any plastic clips. Use a large screw driver or some other flat tool.

You should be able to separate the two pieces as the glue softens with the heating.

When open let sit and cool down. Clean the reflector and the glass using distilled water (leaves no traces. normal water would leave traces on the reflector!) and some absorbent cotton (be vary careful and gentle on the reflector!).

Let dry.

Put the 2 pieces together again and back into the oven. Once warm press to 2 pieces together and close the plastic clips. Let cool down.

Done.

Obviously do all this AT YOUR OWN RISK. I take no responsibility for any damage!

Oliver

Thnx a lot omg1010!

it seems like a hell of a job..... Especially the risk of damaging the reflector.
And I'm not so sure if just "melting" it together seals it perfectely again ...

Greetings!

Hello Gilles,

it should work well putting the pieces together again. However if you are unsure you can always use some silicone to seal the case again. Aucun problème! The only real problem is to get the pieces apart.

A hairdryer on max setting also works well for plastic.

I disassembled my R1200S headlamp to paint the silver surround a titanium color and it was a lot of work. I did not head the assembly and merely used a set of aluminum tire irons to apply pressure against the bond line. I worked the irons around the perimeter of the joint and managed to separate the halves without issue.

I recommend cleaning out the old adhesive and resealing the lamp housing with 3M 5200 Marine Adhesive Sealant. 5200 flows well and remains flexible after it cures. It is very strong and unlike RTV or silicone sealants it has good bond strength.

I also used 3M 5200 to bond the carbon fiber solo seat cover onto the OEM under tray.

Won't work with the glue used by BMW.

Will also not work on BMW headlamp. Once you got it warm on one end it's become cold on the other end. The trick is to wamr up the whole unit to equally soften the glue. Follow the recommendations given and benefit from the experience made by others. Or go ahead and re-invent the wheel.

Well.... I ****ed up.

I broke the glass so now I'm in ****.
Just the glass cracked but I dont think its possible to just order a new glas-unit instead of a whole front light unit.
