Garmin GPS Software

Has anyone purchased the software required to load detailed content to their Garmin GPS unit?
Anyone willing to split the cost? Share?
American, European and Canadain Maps?

I should be recieving a Canadian Map next week.
(Back up copy;-)

Cheers
Tomas

No I haven't but, have you gone to the Garmin site and updated the operating system on your Legend? They are up to 2.41 on the firmware. The latest update (2.41) is dated 26 Aug 2002. I updated mine. It's pretty easy, download the executable and run it with your Etrex plugged in....Fixed alot of little things over the initial load that the unit came with.

Heres the download link

How much is the software you talking about and what does it consist of? Better maps than what the default are? I would be intrested maybe......

I think we're talking about the MapSource Metroguide here:

http://www.garmin.com/cartography/mapSource/MG.html

It's got address level detail for most of the US. Way more detailed than the base map. You load up whatever section of the country you're going to be in and it overlays that part of the base map. You get all your city streets and secondary roads. Even dirt/gravel roads in some cases. You also a detailed "points of interest" database so you can find things like gas stations, banks, restaurants, hospitals, etc. Obviously, it's not 100% accurate since businesses change every day, but it's quite good nonetheless.

I highly recommend it. Nothing like being in some little town out in the middle of West (by god) Virginia and having a street-level detail map at your fingertips.

Yes you are correct about updating the firmware. Being quite versed in IT, that was a natural proccess for me in the first place. First step after I bought the unit infact!
Mine was about 4 revisions behind...the new firmware if 2.41!

Cheers

I would be intrested in the US and Canadian maps. Let me know. I guess you would burn a copy of the CD and we would split the cost?
