First street accident
I suppose I've been lucky. But in 25+ years of riding, I've never been down. That ended last Sun after a great ride. About a mile from home, and elderly gentleman turned left in front of me - I barely had time to brake before hitting him. I rolled off the hood of his car and landed on my feet - unhurt but for some bruises (so I guess I'm still lucky). Plenty of witnesses and the cop mentioned that the man should probably not be driving.
The bike (04 R1100S with less than 11 K) was new to me last year and I spent the winter detailing it, doing the valves and TB balance etc. it was running beautifully. Front end took the damage. So now I have to figure out what to do - waiting on insurance to make some decisions. Seriously bummed... |

Glad you are alright!!!!
Bikes can be fixed or replaced, but other things can not.... We have lost others to such accidents. Get well and let the system handle the bike, parts can be easy to come by for these still.

Glad you are OK. This is a bad time of year, no one is looking for bikes yet. Hopefully the bike can be fixed.
Not a good way to start the season.

Glad you got out of this unhurt and without bruises ...
Let the insurance pay and get yourself the parts to rebuild the bike. Depends on what all is damaged. If it was a rather hard impact the frame might be affected. Check for the telelever mount-points at the engine as well as the engine and gear box mount-points at the frame. If there is any damage it will become too expensive to repair. In that case watch out for another oilhead or go straight for a hexhead. Brgds Oliver |

It's the same the world over just jot it down on your biking CV as experience and carry on,I have no idea how the insurance works in the States but from what I've seen in the past Boxers do not crash well, spend plenty of time checking it over from the frame at the front that holds the headlight and to side panels to the brackets on the back of the frame that the subframe is bolted too they are notorious for damage,if all is good treat it as plus to buy some more goodies

Glad you're ok. Things could have been a lot different. Front end damage on a 11S is not what you want, sorry.

Thanks everyone - I'll let the insurance work it out.
It is surprising the damage caused by what I estimate was a 10-15 mph collision (when I hit the car). Paralever is bent at the point where the shock attaches. Busted plastic as you'd expect and the aluminum front subframe is bent (holds the headlight and oil cooler). I did a quick tally on the cost of parts that I can see damaged and it exceeds what I paid for the bike (and the value on KBB). I have a couple of brand new parts that it pulled off (CF hugger and a Booster Plug) that I put on the bike 100 miles ago. If I don't find another R11S, I guess I'll sell them. |

ebay is your friend for parts if you decide to repair it on your own. Glad it's only the bike that needs repair, feel lucky, it isn't always so.

Sorry to hear of your accident but glad you're ok.
I have a nice R1200S for sale if you're looking for a replacement. |
