My dealer in Atlanta just gave me a Mann W712/20 oil filter for my S and K bikes. He said it would NOT void the warranty. It's a German made filter, I believe is specified for use in Audi's.The price was 50% less than the BMW filter. So far so good,no engine probs are noises.I'm still amazed he sold me this filter as a replacement. Most dealers wouldn't dare.

This thread has come up before. Sorry I cant remember its title , but maybe some of the other guys can.
If memory serves me correctly - some non BM filters were acceptable - and others mentioned were a BIG NO NO - To what category the one that you are using falls into I dont know. Mark |

The local European service agent has told that Mann manufacture the BMW oil filters so they will be OK to use.
I am currently using a BMW car oil filter part # from IBMWR. I would be cautious in using very cheap aftermarket parts. Cheers TREVOR ![]()

MANN builds all the filter requirments for most of todays (And Yesterdays) German automotive manufacturers. In fact the still manufacture the airhead filters in Austria.
I believe that filter is off of Audi's older 4 banger...the Audi 4000. I was told also that there is a alternative to the original BMW filter. One of which is the one you mentioed. As well as some sort of FRAM unit. But heard that a special filter wrench must be used to install/remove. Personally, from what I know about filters.....I would cut open the original BMW filter and compare it to a Mann filter. Some things to watch out for? Filter Displacement...... Internal By Pass valve...... Higher temperature ratings..... You mentioned no problems so far......what are you expecting? Engine failure.....are falling short of 250,000km before engine rebuild! ;-) My advise? Do some homework....it will pay off! Keep us posted... Good Luck Tomas

I buy oil filters at the BMW car dealership spares division,at less than half the normal price. They are all the same.part no 11 42 1 258 039.that's off the filter I bought today. Oh yeh, they had a price hike two weeks ago-they used to be $8.95AUD, now$10.52+GST=$11.55 AUD. they are (were) $26 in the bike shop for the same part.

Oil filters exposed
You guys got me poking around at oil filters, and I found this site where a guy has torn apart a dozen or so filters from different manufacturers. Apologies if this is old news.

Hey Tom,
You hit nail on the head... If Fram would spend as much money on thier filter quality as they did on thier advertising they would be all set. I did the cut away route a few years ago. They were by far the worst quality "guts" of the 4 filters I cut open. Believe it or not napa makes a good filter (gold line). Relatively cheap too! I'm using them on everything I drive (even the mower) except the bike - there's no cross ref. # yet. I am currently using a K&N oil filter on the bike. What was fram's slogan "pay me now...or pay me later" I'll stick with not paying fram at all!

Amsoil now makes a replacement filter for current BMW K bikes and Oil heads.
I have compared media of both the stock filter and the Amsoil. I feel that the Amsoil filter is better. The media of the stock filter was very thin. Also I would not use a filter unless it is of equal or higher quality than stock. Mobil 1, Amsoil, BMW are about it. I would stay clear of fram. http://www.amsoil.com/products/smf.htm ![]()

Tomas,
The K & N oil filter was 12.00us. I think that's cheaper than the BMW. Anyway the quality looks to be at least the same if not better. fwiw

I’m on my fourth K&N KN-163 on the R11S and haven’t had any problems... I also use them on my R11RS and 02 Daytona. I like the 14mm six point nut for installation and removal its also pre drilled for safety-wire for those of you that do track-days (requirement).

The proper Fram filter for BMWs is the ph6063. You cannot compare other fram model numbers not meant for BMW consumption.
The ph6063 feels exactly like a regular BMW filter - heavy - and it fits the BMW filter wrench. I'm quite sure that you could use them forever on your bike to no ill effect. The downside is they can be expensive and hard to find. When I lived a couple hundred miles from a BMW dealer they were a pretty good deal if purchased by the case. best, Dave |

From the K&N website (US)
Air Filter: BM-1199
Oil Filter: KN-163 For 2002 R1100S, so should be the same for 99, 00 and 01
