Noisy Neotec

I wear a Shoei Neotec helmet. I know this sounds strange but at highway speeds the right side of the helmet is friggin' loud. Like B1-Bomber-take-off-in-my-ear loud. The left side is quiet as a church.

No, my left ear is not clogged

Has anyone had a similar issue with a helmet like this? Suggestions?

Thanks

I have a Shoei Qwest, and experienced a nice whistle whenever the lower chin vent was open. After living with it for ~2 years, and getting more and more frustrated, I finally decided to take a closer look. What I found was that there was a sharp ridge right under where the vent closed that was working as a really effective coach's whistle, basically. I took the helmet apart and filed the ridge down, reassembled and it made a big difference. Not perfect quite yet, but I have some more filing to do. Not sure if this is your issue or not, but I'd at least take a look at the vents.

Got earplugs? They cure all kinds of weird noises.

I wear earplugs on longer rides but my commute to work is barely 15 minutes.

That's not the point though. There is an issue with the helmet, I am hoping someone else has dealt with a similar situation and may be able to pass along what they had found.

Would the next reply be "buy a new helmet"?

Good idea! I should of thought of that.

On a serious note every time I've seen a helmet where the vent came off I was always amazed at how sloppy/shoddily the holes were cut into the shell. Hardly ever did they line up well with liner or the vent. I'd do as your doing & clean it up some more.

Check that the face shield is installed correctly on the right side.
I find you really have to watch how you install the shield and that the little tabs are correctly in place.
If they are not, the shield will still go up and down, but there can be a large gap if the parts are not mated correctly.

Cheers

The Neotec has dampening pads (for lack of a better word) in the space where speakers can go. Have you checked they are present in both sides?

Yes, both pads are present.

I ended up doing this...

Worked pretty well, made a noticeable difference. It's some thin, self-adhesive weatherstripping I found at Home Depot.

Have you tried going in to a Shoei dealer? Or called Shoei? They have been most helpful to me and provided replacement parts free of charge when some hinge parts disintegrated on my Multitec.
