Drive assembly rubber boot

I am planning on trying to install a new rear shock and would like to address the re-attachment of the boot assembly pictured as part #3 & 4. I have the ring and the boot is fine.

When I bought the bike the boot was pulled away from the attachment area. I pulled the spring clip out but cannot figure a way to get it back in there without some disassembly. I get that it has to be compressed and then released inside the top to capture the rubber boot inside the housing.

So I figure as long as I'm working in this area via the shock mount how do I go about making this repair? I have been riding with it open for 2 years and rarely ride in the rain but would like to get it closed up proper. Now seems like the time.

I have Remus and that has to be dropped as well to get the shock bolt out, so there is quite a bit to wrench on for a neophyte. Handy enough for sure, but it will be uncharted territory for me.

I don't know how to get the spring back inside that boot without taking it off. Just not a lot of room to work there. If you do figure it out, I have some tricks and techniques to get the boot back onto the trans. Pretty easy once you know how.

you will need to take the arm off,
to get the tranny side on leave the static pivot pin off and
push the arm forward until the boot slips over the barb on the tranny boot flange
it should just pop on.
it will compress as you push it forward more than the normal position and snap on
some grease helps.
these are often not on correctly

I'm where brentw1 is on this but good luck. If you decide to pull the arm or are having trouble getting the boot back on the trans should you figure out a way to get that spring in there without removing the arm, I can help with how to get the boot back on the trans with the arm mounted also and suggest a simple tool to remove the static pivot pin for the arm pivot on the frame. There's also an order of operations to reassembling the final drive and drive shaft if you take the arm off. Best of luck.
