Final drive recall

Hi all,
I just read on another forum mention of a BMW Recall coming out in the next couple weeks, and relates to the hollow type final drives and cracking...
Our 11s has a hollow rear drive, mentions something like 336,000 bikes world wide in this recall..!!!
Any body in trade know anything yet..?

Guess by hollow rear drive they meaning the later type then, so yes the R1200S could be in that, something about over tightening and cracks I read, seems the 11s is stronger, we just have to put up with the crap clutch spline and possible gearbox alignment problem...:-(

If it's cracking, and it's on the "hollow drive" models, then it's most likely the brake caliper mount/flange, not the final drive itself:

Anyone heard anything about this recall in the US?

This has already been discussed. Do a wheel flange search in threads. I think the recall will be for all the bikes with aluminum alloy flange's. The 2015 R12LC has a steel flange. tjs

The R12S has a different final drive. We are exempt from the recall.

My Ohlins from the purchase in 2007 so it should be okay. Thanks for the link.

??????? Based on what? The flange that cracks the R1200GS is the same part number as the R1200S.

I can't comment on the shock, but the R12s will be subject to the recall for the wheel / brake disc carrier.

Mine has just been replaced FOC due to having cracked.

Rear hub flange recall

The German monthly "Motorrad" has a page dating from just after Christmas showing a drawing of the affected part - so if yours looks like it, speak to your local dealer. If not, forget it.

Here's the link to the page:-

BMW-Rückruf K- und R-Modelle von November 2003 bis April 2011 - Motorradbranche - MOTORRAD

If you don't read German, what it basically says is that on the affected bikes, riders who did a wheel or tyre swap were tightening up the wheel bolts too much when they replaced the weheel on the hub, thus weakening the plate. They'll replace it FOC with a steel one. And yes, it's 80-odd thousand bikes in Germany, but more than 330 thousand world wide.

If you do read German, you'll see that the notice actually quotes the German word "Rückruf" - literally "call-back" which of course in English means Recall. First time ever that BMW has deigned to use the word in place of their coy preferred "Technical Revision". Now there's a thing...

About time something dented their scandalous profits. Eighteen thousand euro for a new water-cooled R12GS - ridiculous.

Great how about a picture or some facts to support that statement.

Well, I hate to be the bearer of bad news but the only difference is the black color. If you look at the parts fiche on MaxMoto. The rear drive brake disc carrier has the same part number for the GS and S. The carrier is the part that cracks and is being recalled.
