pd, I hate to ask a silly question but did you try changing just the filter first? The pump on my ride was also howling until I swapped the clogged filter.

Yup.
.
Same level of humming with new filter.

pd,

Did the new fuel pump quiet things down significantly? I also noticed no noise reduction with a new fuel filter installed. I have checked all vent lines, fuel lines, filter, etc, and everything looks ok. I can easily blow through both vent lines with the fuel tank lid open, so I'm sure they must be clear. If I can expect less noise out of a new pump, then that is going to be my next upgrade, for sure. That thing is driving me nuts! Next will probably be a PowerFilter too.

I have never been inside the tank, pickup stuff, does anybody know, is there a pickup screen?

pdonnell 11-06-2002 04:50 PM

The pump still makes a audible humming sound when I have about 1.5 gallons left. Otherwise its dead silent.
.
Yes, the pump has a screen attached to its base.

Dyno Run

Sure would be interesting to see a before/after dyno run

a pipe without a chip

is like sex without a rubber

You just can't go full speed in total confidence

Going from stock to just an induct, thats just not right. All bikes in the US, I mean all bikes are lean from the factory. The damn EPA makes em have to be that way to meet noise and emission standards. The first thing I do to a bike is re-jet or remap (FI) before I would even consider letting more air in. Now add a pipe to the mix, you just have to have more fuel to take advantage of the additional flow.
You will not see the advantages of a pipe without remapping the FI, it just isn't worth the additonal $$ if you aren't going to go all the way.

Like my mom used to tell me,

Dammit Billy, why don't you just stick your head all the way up your a$$, do it right the first time dammit!

My mom was a cool lady...............................

Firebolter,

you are probably right about the leaness. On the Aussie models I ran mine for a very long time with porting, InDuct, Foran exhaust and even cams with the stock chip without the slightest problem.

Then Epicycle developed the Varireg and I tried it by adjusting the fuel pressure and found that it did improve the overall performance.

A little at a time will get the right results.
