fuel pump
I just put my 2001 R11S back on the road after a 2 month top end rebuild because of a catastrophic exhaust valve failure. Along the way I did an absectomy because I had to take it off to replace the fuel disrto hose which is under everything. Any I put it it back together with The ABS computer so my brake lights and speedo would work. It ran perfect after all was back together much to my surprise. After about a week of it died on the freeway, fuel pump failure no sound at all from the tank,so I started playing with fuses and relays, replaced the fuel pump which I should have done before. Fuel pump not the problem not fuses probably relay. Won't know till I get a knew one. Question is I pulled the starter relay and put it back and it engaged the starter without the ignition being on. Obviously I put it back the wrong way, I didn't even know you could or is something more sinister at work here ? Karma for yanking my ABS ? I hope I haven't totally mucked my wiring up. Please help me.

I'm not sure it can be put in backwards.

If you jump hole 2 to hole 6 the starter will turn even if the key is off. Maybe your starter relay has gone bad internally.

As JimMoore said, an internally shorted starter relay will activate the starter.
Replace the starter relay first. As for why the bike died on the hway, check the side stand switch. After you've replaced the starter relay. In order to check the side stand switch : Put the bike on it's side stand (side stand down). With the switch to the "Off" position, put the bike into first gear. Turn the switch to "On" position. Note, your neutral light is not lite. Did you hear the fuel pump ? Most likely not. Pull in the clutch lever. Now , with the clutch lever pulled in, kick the side stand up, you should hear the fuel pump. |

or you can just bypas the sidestand and mortor run switches
for whatever reason bmw thought you should be able to crank the motor even with the fuel injection disabled. really should be a rewire mod to defeat the starter at the same time. |

Fuel Pump
Not going through the whole thread but I experienced a fuel pump nightmare on my 2004 R1100S few years back. Had an intermedient (sp) electrical problem.
To keep this short, my problem was the fuel pump mounting plate in the gas tank where the three (or is it four) wires go through the tank. The wires looked fine outside and inside of the tank but guess were shorting out in the "plastic puck". You can check with a volt meter and make sure you wiggle the wires. New plate was about $300 and good to go. What a headache this was but bike has been running fine since. |

It was none of the above, the motronic plug had worked its way loose. Without the ABS unit the battery tray does not have a lot of support and bounces a lot I tried wire ties but thats not a very positive fix. I have it kind of tight but any ideas on how to tie the battery tray motronic bracket to the frame would be appreciated.

Battery trey is the motronic bracket. Unless I am missing something. Motronic plug can only come lose if it wasn't installed correctly in the first place. . I have designed the bracket to hold the brains of the iABS system in place, to keep that part steady.
Can you post a picture. |

Only if I take it apart again which I'm probably not going to do without a good reason. The plate you show in the other thread is perfect to protect the wiring in the ABS brain but how do you keep the battery tray from bouncing around? It seems the ABS unit is part of the mounting solution, probably part of BMW's evil plan to keep me from pitching the ABS.

Here's a thread with a photo.
There's two depressions in the battery tray. Each depression has a hole . Battery box removal |
