Front Crank seal leak

I have a leak on the bottom crank lid as pictured. I put some silicone to seal but still leaks. O ring looks good but it probably too flat. Questions.

1. If I canīt find the same o ring locally I am thinking of make a proper gasket. Anybody done this before?

2. Does the orientation of the lid vertically make any difference. When I pulled the cover the first time the lid was sat inverted to how the picture is. Flat part down.

(pic is just a reference not my bike)

That is your camshaft cover and Max's parts fiche shows the flat at the top. O-ring is 48 X 3mm.

Do you ride in a salt plant when it rains and wash with acid? Sorry I can't help with your question.

Lol. Didn't see that, I was fixated on the train wreck of a engine. It's probably a GS. Good on the leak!

Many 1200s of the era have the same problems with the front cover. Mine looked like that at 17000 miles despite a cosseted life with a fair weather rider.

Quite a few were replaced under warranty. I chose to repainted mine in-situ.
