That's not the best price I've seen. The ealrier bikes are going for 7-8 now in Los Angeles and I bet they come down more. There does not seem to be a group of people looking to buy these bikes used.

Not the absolute lowest I've ever seen, but it may be the cheapest I've seen a post-2000 low mileage abs model go for.
So basically, let someone put the first 5000 miles on it, and store it for you a year, and you get it for little more than half price.
Not a bad deal. If I could sign up for that same deal on an ST4S or last year 998, I'd be on it. A real deal for someone.

later

As I have learned,

Never buy new.
Never.
Ever.

Welp, I paid about $17,000 for my bike with Corbin seat back in January of 2000. And still paying!

Not that I'm mad cause I'll keep it anyway..

But, its funny how an already steep depreciation curve is given a further kick in the pants by BMW, COUPLED with extremely expensive parts! A surefire strategy to keep wallets drained. I did this with a BMW car once too. Oh well. Gotta have it!

I'm only mad that I didn't have extra cash laying around to buy the one off ebay.

Talking

If the guy bought the bike with %0.9 in 2001, and he put $3,000 down, like I did, I don't think he came close to recouping...I agree, never, ever buy new...never again, that is!!! Then again, do what I'll do...never, ever sell....or at least not for a loooong time. (I do not do a lot of riding and I expect to own this bike for at least the next 8 years and then I'll market it a "Vintage!!! ;O

That sounds like a great deal to me. Just a couple of months ago, a dealer offered to trade my 2001 Special Edition R1100S, with ABS, heated grips with 6000+ miles on it straight accross for a new Honda CBR954. That bike that lists over $10,000 but sells new in the $9500 range. I sobered up and did not do the deal, but it seems like whoever wanted to sell the S on ebay just wanted to get rid of it quickly. Nonetheless, those of us who bought pre Boxercup editions have taken a beating on resale values. I decided to keep mine and keep it in the family with my wife as the primary rider. That was more cost effective than a new bike for her.

One only "takes a beating" if one sells the bike ( for less than you paid for it ).

I am very happy with my ~$25,000 investment. Worth every penny. Prolly more, as new bits become available.

Resale value

So, you can imagine the value of my '99 ABS bike w/ 47k miles on it. Sure, TBR pipes, hugger fender, wide rear wheel, shorter paralever, Fox shocks, but still no value on a sale.
Good thing I love the bike!

Yeah, you could take a bath on buying these. But then again, I never heard Charles Schwab pushing them
It's a fun and transportation vehicle, not an investment vehicle.

Crap, based on case, we'd all be better off with the cheapest possible toyota.
200,000 miles and virtually no maint for not a lot over 10k.

Used is the way to go though. Mine is an early model I bought 1-yr and 2200 miles used. Based on list price of bike and included accessories, including a pair of Öhlins, I saved about $5k. At that rate of depreciation, I wish it had had twice that much mileage, maybe 3x
