Gearbox drain plug leak...

NooB here.

New to me 2000 R1100S. 42k miles. Very well maintained.
Recently did a fly and ride from MD to WI.
Noticed a smell and found some moisture on the frame beneath the drain plug.
Got home and parked it. Came back a few days later to a silver dollar size stain on the floor directly beneath the drain plug. Wiped everything clean. A few days later, drip starting to form on drain plug. Wiped it clean. Took it out for a spin to get it up to temp. Put it up on the centerstand, cracked loose the plug and re-tightened. Came back this morning. Drip starting again.
Engine case looks sound. No obvious, to me, issues.
Suggestions?

I don't think there's going to be a way of removing the drain bolt without all the oil coming out.

No washer on this drain plug

Cheezewhiz,
I don't know if you know this or not but this drain plug for the gearbox doesn't have a sealing washer.

Before you drain the gearbox oil and try to reseal the drain plug, make absolutely sure the oil is coming from the plug. It could be leaking from somewhere else and collecting there.

Sometimes small oil leaks are hard to find.

The tightening torque specification is 55 nm, which is pretty tight.

Yep, I'm aware of the lack of crush washer.

I'm pretty sure it's from the gearbox. I've always found gearbox oil to have a distinct smell and the look of it is pretty clear. Just changed a few thousand miles ago by the PO. The rest of the engine is dry.

Thanks for the heads up on the torque.

Yes, the smell is added to discourage you from putting it in your engine. It's called 90 weight when it's really around 40 for the same reason.

at the end of the day, it just needs to not leak
I would try a sealing gasket if you cant get it to seal,
unless of course as stated elsewhere here you have a leaking shaft seal etc
and it is just dripping off of the lowest point.

Welcome Mr. Cheeze, or is it Mr. Whiz?

I had the same problem that I rectified by installing an aluminum crush washer. It solved the problem completely. I have no idea what BMW didn't include one from the outset. Here's the saga in excruciating detail. If you need a crush washer, PM me with your address and I'll mail you one.
