HP2S Sport tail light....

Last spring I had the rear of bike apart for a luggage project. Along the way I had the tail light assembly (still attached to wires) balancing on the hugger. It slid off and swung on the wires a bit and hit the floor. All seemed well when I left for my late spring California trip. Then I started losing lights. A few of the LED's where not working. After time (months) fewer and fewer worked. Then the brake lights stopped working as well. Nothing left. I still rode until recently but ya this has to be addressed. For some reason I was blaming the ECU. Maybe because when I wanted my heated grips to be "turned on" at the dealership they said they had a replace ECU message and could not do it. Otherwise the bike runs like a champ. Today I had a couple free hours so I decided to have a closer look. It seems the illuminating bits of the LED's have popped off. Crazy!

Wondering if I can wire new ones in - longshot LOL. This part is abut $500 CDN yay.

That sucks, so much for vibration resistant, they must of subcontracted to China. Those look really tough to replace, you'll need micro fingers to solder them.

I thought there was mention somewhere that a GS taillight would work as a replacement??
The other alternative is to get one of the aftermarket LED taillights and install it into the taillight??

Like this.......

Some how the fact that one or more were done must have blasted the rest. Some electrical issue. Any insights into that?

This came up a while back... you aren't the first. Forgot what they did to fix it. Seems like a good NTSB/DOT campaign candidate like the E46 taillights which were self-destructing.

Edit: here's one thread...
LED Lights out on HP2 sport?

Interesting. Big Red has a higher mileage bike as do I. Seems like no co-incidence to me. Not impressed and leaning to a droptarotter solution but the unit is so sealed - like welded glue sealed... hard to imagine getting it apart - aftermarket light bars into it and back together nicely...

Maybe dremmel it apart and try these...$30 bucks should do it..

I'm sure you could make something work, but I wonder if you might get a warning on your dash because of the CanBus??

Also if you go the Amazon LED route, how many wires are you going to have to connect?? That might turn into a rats nest??

Maybe install one of these.....

It seem like you to have to actually know something about resistors and the such to do the single led route. I guess I have to cut it apart and have a look. Maybe I can piggy back on the resistors in place...ack - down the rabbit hole. I kind of want to keep the original look. I think those trailer leds are white with a red lens....

I wonder why I didn't get a warning the no tail lights or brake lights...

You could try a little experiment first.......pull apart the tail light plug and just push the wires of an LED into the socket to see if you get any warning lights.

I think I have a truck LED you could try if you like.
I don't think you will need resistors for the LED's.........resistors are sometimes needed when the LED's are used as turn signals. Not for a brake light application.

Cheers

Here are a couple picts with the back cut off. The yellow one shows the reason for the problem. Paper thin ABS tabs hold the board in place and they were broken. You can see that the board was floating around by the wear marks. I see no show stoppers on making one out of a perf board. Going to give it a shot!

Wow.....that looks fragile!
I'm sure you will come up with something that will work!

How's the surgery holding up? I'll be in the market for a fix soon as my bike has lost two of the LEDs.

Funny! my taillight just failed last night bummer. Be ready for your to go pop. My bike has 10,700 miles on it now, the circuit board for the leds is rattling around inside. I'll let you know how I get on with a replacement. I'm hoping a R1200GS unit will work with our bikes. Wish me luck.

I was lucky to find a used unit that was in like new shape from Sandbar - thanks. So the repair project was shelved.
