Fairing/dashboard/tupperware alignment issue
 

So I yore apart the front end today to replace the bent subframe (a nightmare, hope I'll never have to do that again).

Putting it all back together I'm having an issue aligning the black plastic collar that goes around the dashboard...

I either seem to get a gap above or below regardless of how I do - how should it be on theory and the best of worlds?

I'd wash it, throw on the windshield & go riding. Did I mention wash it?

Now that you mention it -
My black plastic collar is not flush with the fairing on the right hand side, but the left side is.
Mine has about 1/4 inch gap between the black plastic collar and the dash.

I guess I'll realign things if I ever take those parts off again.

The windshield on mine has a black bar along the bottom edge that hides that gap.

Question is, how is it supposed to be...?

I can aligned it with the dash, the fairing or pull it apart seeing if there's a way of repositioning the dash to close the gap that way (although I believe this not to be an option)...

You said replace the frame ? With what a brand spanker out of the wrapping because if that's not the case it'll never fit I bent mine years ago and I have never managed to to get it right I have 2 spares hanging on the garage wall but you can never be sure how good secondhand ones are or their history so I never bothered.

I'd be interested to see the jig they were made on!!!

I did that very same job the other weekend. I went with a second hand frame which was absolutely fine (albeit I had bought a second hand frame before that got damaged in the post so I had to return it).

The gap is usually at the top on all the bikes I've seen. The screen does hide it at the bottom so that may look better, but I think the clocks move a little bit on their rubber mounts so that gap may well be to leave some space for movement otherwise it'll break the plastic cover.

No a better secondhand one.

My old one made the fairing sit over an inch to the left at the front, it now sits more or less centered by the looks of it so this one seems fine.

Allegedly came off an un-crashed bike and I believe to bend the top part you'd need a substantial crash which would have left other visible issues on the frame as well, although you never know...

Look at the photos of the old and new frame, especially the top centre bracket that attaches just under the triple clamp, and you'll see how severely bent mine was...

And does the gap on my first picture seem normal to your? Should have taken a photo of this before pulling it apart but was mainly worried about the looms and getting that right. If some of you could post some pictures of your bikes it would be greatly appreciated...

Yes, that gap looks fine to me, just the same as mine. I'll see if I can find a photo. The only photos I have this time are the cable routing but the first time I stripped it I took more photos - I'll check and post anything I have.

Have you finished reassembling it? Sounds like you met a friend of mine the other night at the pub!
