New S-type based on R Nine T

Apologize if this is a repost, as BMW rendered this news six weeks ago.

The newest 2017 BMW S-type twin model will be based on R Nine T. Three paint variations for R Nine T S have been circulated:

Initial thoughts:
- I like the DOHC oil cooled platform (non-wethead).
- Likely slightly less horsepower but greater torque than 12S (per Nine T).
- Likely will not feature optional locking luggage system.
- Return to conventional front suspension.
- Rear suspension less robust than factory option 12S.
- Original Nine T weight slightly more than 12S however Nine T S-type appears lighter than original.

Good looking retro, similar in some respects to appearance of Ducati Sport1000S. Looking forward to seeing it next year.

I really don't see a new S type. More like a r9t with a fairing slapped on it.

I agree. I also think the new RS is closer in looks and spirit and if I were buying new that would be the Beemer for me.

So that's as close as it gets to the r90S But agreed it is far away from the r11s, which the RS replaces more directly.

Not quite following this example. I'm not sure which way you're going with it to be honest.

In my historical documents, the following were the specs for the 1999 R1100S and the 1999 R1100R: (R1100S on Left)

Horsepower: "S" 98 bhp @ 7,500 "R" 80 bhp @ 6,750
Torque: "S" 70 ft-lbs @ 5,750 "R" 70 ft-lbs @ 5,250
Compression: "S" 11.3:1 "R" 10.3:1
Gearbox: "S" six-speed "R" five-speed
Final Drive: "S" 2.75:1 "R" 3.00:1
Top Speed: "S" 140 mph "R" 121 mph

Many of the significant breakthroughs were documented in these original articles:

Motorcyclist (Oct 1998) https://ckcarr.smugmug.com/Motorcycles/October-1998-Motorcyclist/

Cycle World (Oct 1998) https://ckcarr.smugmug.com/Motorcycles/October-1998-Cycle-World/

Yep, two different machines in many respects and as you note in "specifications'. Thanks for the information and post. Maybe ikchris was posting with " tongue in cheek"?

They should offer it in Daytona Orange.
