Reasons for no start R1200S

Hello Folks, other than a bad battery is there a reason why my starter won´t turn. I connected a car battery and it turned but there was no gas. When I hit the starter again the starter engine would go clack clack clack....Guess my Christmas present will not make it home tonight.

A bad battery is the likely suspect. Are you getting a good enough connection with the jumpers?
How do you know the engine was not getting fuel?

Cheers

Engine turned about 10 times but no start. Since it was shipped by sea I figured they removed the gas from the tank. Thats solved though I add some fuel. Will have to try again this Thursday. This sucks cause she was supposed to be my Christmas present.

Rique;

That might not be enough cranking time. Both of my Hexheads can be cantankerous to fire after a winter layover.

Hook up a good jumper battery and try it again.

Good luck!

That is still a nice Christmas present!

Cheers

In order to save some current for start up can I disconnect the headlamp by removing the
socket that is center on the dash or must this be plugged in to start engine?

I got back from my second attempt. I took a well charged battery and the engine now turns but no start. I noticed that when pressing the front brakes no ABS sounds or nothing. I may have a blow fuse. Display passes both the First and Second Check! controls of self diagnosis. No Engine warning light.

Does the 1200 use same fueses as the 1100? where is the fuse box. No information in the user or service manual?

I will take the spark plugs out tomorrwo to see whats going on.

What has me worried is the look of the oil window. I can´t see oil level just what seems to be some sludge. My pal that purchased the bike for me tells me it started right up with no problem. Owner tells me the window is like that cause the bike sat for 6 years but oil is OK.

I will change oil tomorrow and see if I get spark when I crank.

Thanks Riq

I don't believe there are any fuses. I don't think the ABS makes a sound. I do think fuel pump does - are you hearing it?

Perhaps time for basics. Do you get a spark? Do you get fuel?

Or course I will defer to those who know best.

RIQUE...

Maybe drop the oil out, measure how much comes out, see what it looks like, if ok, put back in for the start up an warm through, maybe a engine flush fluid before new oil an filter...
Just some loose thoughts... Good luck an hope it comes together for you...

+1. ABS IV does not make any sound when front brakes are applied. On a R12S Headlight does not come on till the engine is running. two cents from tjs

r12xxx bikes don't have fuses per se it is all controlled from the central electric module.
I hate to ask is the side stand up? and the engine kill on,
you should hear the fuel pump, turn on then off when you turn on the key.
if not don't waste any time trying to crank it over,
the fuel pump could easily be frozen from sitting or the safety switches bad.
also the oil looks awful and should be at the mid point of the sight glass.
do not start it until you have established it has oil in it. very bad for the bearings.
oil should not clump on the sight glass.

The engine is in Neutral with the side stand down. Kit switch is in the middle.
I will remove oil tomorrow and put in a new set of plugs. I read in the manual that if you apply the clutch lever when the engine is off it will not start. An that one must
switch on apply clutch and then start

still, easy if the fuel pump does not run it is not going to start.
you might need to listen carefully tank open, and put up the side stand just for drill.
I had a r1200st , yes ugly, that was a wreck that had been sitting for 5 years
and the fuel pump was seized, if you get to that point, there is a fuel pump
booster that goes in the top of the fuel pump carrier, remove that and then
you can access the pump wires for testing without taking out the pump.

also this is seldom the plugs or coils you have redundant ones, you would have to have
4 bad ones for it not to fire at all.

Does the pump go buzz when ignition is turned on? or does it start upon cranking the engine?

Thanks for the support Riq
