Servo or no servo on r1200s?
 

Can someone tell me if an '07 r1200s is servo assist on the abs models. Please tell me it ain't...

No servo assist ABS on R12S.

No servo.

BMW have been on a pretty steep learning curve since they came out of the woodwork and stopped selling strange bikes to even stranger people :) in the late 90's you only have to look at the history of the K1200 from 2004 when they ditched all things servo in 06 and hence never buy one pre 07 so by the time they had got to the R1200 they had learned their lesson.

Still hadn't learned much about marketing but hey ho that's another thread.

Sticking with the theme if not the specifics, is there a way to de-servo a servo system and still retain ABS and decent braking, or is it all too integrated? Without the motor running, the brakes ain't much on an '04 11S. I liked the ABS on my '99 just fine.

you would need to do what I am going to attempt this fall, put the absII back on a servo bike,
should be entertaining, the only real issue will be adding the 2004 twin spark bits
but yeah I think abs is a requirement if it can be done, and the servo one works if the switches
are set up correctly etc, but failure is a bad thing.
the servo system is really a bad idea, and the replacment system was unreliable...
from a manufacturing defect.

Good news about the servo now to figure out how to get the rear brake to well... stop the bike a little.

Search "rear brake is crap". That will take you to the fix for the rear brake.

Just about all the "rear brake is crap" threads seem to be about the R1200S, not R1100S, but if you dig in a bit there is a lot of general brake bleeding and brake pad advice and opinion. At the least a lot of bleedin' opinion.

Respectfully, that entire "rear brake is crap" thread is unnecessary.

The rear brake system on an R1200S requires bleeding every 2K-3K miles, that is to say when it becomes noticeably spongy.

A good brake bleeding tool and air compressor make this an easy job requiring a few minutes of time.

It works fine this way.

Removing the rear brake pedal periodically to clean & lube, helps too.

Bleeding every 2-3K? For a 2006 or newer bike there is just about no other maintenance item with that short an interval, much less one that is 20-30K on any other bike. Any guess as to root cause?

The OE service manual on '07 R series indicated brakes bleeding once every 2 years - not sure myself where 2-3K mi requirement came from but it's unlikely BMW recommended?! It may have been some sort of "belt and suspenders" kinda approach by someone who felt better doing it that way... :D

While rear brake on R12S is definitely not of a same performance level that my old 07 R12GSA rear brake was (had both bikes at the same time), depending on the rider and their riding habits, it could've been, or not, considered satisfactory :confused:?? May be even designed for "occasional" use...:)

All I needed rear brake on R12S is to hold bike on the hill, which it did, so it didn't bother me all that much... Werner kit I got at the time did help a bit as it did represent better execution than OE bushing - ymmv! ;)
