So there are currently two HP2 Sport bikes on Cycle Trader. One is in Texas and the other is here in San Francisco at the BMW dealership.

I bought one earlier this year. I only use mine for 70 to 150 mile sport rides and the HP2 does everything right. It also fits a 6' rider at 220lbs fully geared. Even better, the stock springs seem to be the right ones for my weight..not sure how that's possiible, but I do run my sag a bit softer.

I use to be an old track rat so I know how a bike should feel/behave and I set up the suspension properly. The motor is fantastic for street duty as are the brakes. There is no vibration, but it is a twin so maybe I'm use to it...not sure. The front end is slightly vague at faster speeds but whatever, not a track bike. The one thing you need on the bike is a power commander 5. Mine has one and there are no fueling issues. My only complaint is no storage space for a tire repair kit and pump. I'm not ready to put a large tank bag on it other than the tiny one BMW made for it.

Screw common sense. Just go for it. If you hate it you can sell it.

Thank you of the offer. I had seen this. Not sure if it'sABS equipped or not. I have a good friend, a long term NorCal MOA guy, who I thought I might have swing by as well. Wonder if they'd take my s1k as trade?

Also, I had responded (maybe too long) to yesterdays posts, SergioK in particular, but it got nabbed by the moderator bot "needs approval" don't know what I did wrong, but hoping it makes it to the forum, or learn how to make it OK to post.

Thanks again guys I really appreciate all the info and perspectives.

yeah I had a st I rebuilt, but really it was just to ugly, had to go before it infected my other bikes.

I cannot comment directly on the HP2 and like you I lusted after one purely for selfish reasons.

When I wrecked my heavily modified Ducati ST4S, I bought an 07 R12S. I had convinced myself that was the bike for me. I never bonded with the bike. I really missed the higher revving motor and the wider power band.

I have spent 6 or 7 track days on an S1000RR and I loved that bike. I just knew I wouldn't want to ride it for hours on the street. I am 53 years old, 6'3" and 220 with all my gear on. In full race crouch all day just does not work for my beaten up back and joints.

That got me thinking.... why not an S1000R ? Almost all the goodness of the RR in a more live-able package. I started looking around. I didn't care for any of the modern Ducati bikes and I didn't want to go back and start fresh with an older ST I had to build up to my standards. In came the Aprilia Tuono.

If you put any stock in the general motorcycle press, the Tuono ranks a bit ahead of the S1000R, but in reality it was splitting hairs. The kicker was the cost of the Tuono V4 APRC with ABS was a lot less than an S1000R in the used market.

I narrowed my focus to the 14 or 15 Tuono because I wanted the ABS. I picked up a 15 for $8k and I have never looked back. Its comfortable enough I can ride all day. The power is beyond what I'll ever need on the street. I had the full Akra system with headers on my R12S and sure the low end grunt was nice but I missed winding out those sweet revs. Sure the R12S was pretty fast, I just didnt bond well with it, it always left me missing something. I get frigging giddy banging through the quickshift running up the revs and the bike is so tossable in the twisties its a blast to ride. I did one track day on it already too boot!

I would have liked a chance to ride and HP2 Sport but I just don't see it comparing to a more modern "standard" version of a sport bike. Tuono, R1000S, KTM Super Duke 1290, that sort of bike. All the goodness of a sport bike in a more user friendly package.

First post here.Former NineT owner. I had an original ‘14 when they first came out and was active on the NineT forum and had it pretty well modified. I loved that bike and I loved that they were rare and original. I used it for touring, camping, commuting, and even track days.

However, the NineT was supposed to be a limited run and I became disalusioned when BMW kept producing them and then made all the spinoffs. It just didn’t feel that special any more.

I have an S100XR now which does everything better except look good. However, I do miss that boxer in a light(ish) package but I wanted something a bit more original and rare.

That being said, it looks like I will be coming home in a way. I found a HP2 Sport with about 3k miles for the price of a lightly used NineT. Looks like I will be collecting it next Saturday and will keep it as my toy next to the do everything XR.

That’s low mileage so what a nice result in finding that one!
I would be interested in your thoughts on the bike once you have done a few rides since you have other BMW bikes.
Has anyone ever disliked riding them?

I'm sure someone has disliked riding one. Some people absolutely hate boxer engines and some people only want the fastest bike out there. I personally like the boxer engine and I am not good enough to put a RR through its paces. I think this bike is a happy medium.

My one fear is that it may feel slow compared to my XR. It will feel lighter and lower for sure, but the XR is a hoot to ride and I ended up selling my NineT after I bought it as it felt too agrarian. After I sold it, I missed that feeling a bit.

I think that you shouldn’t go looking for a speed/performance comparison.
Reason being, I used to have a K1300S that I liked but I had little self control so I was riding it at Jail speeds. I knew I should reduce the BHP as my freedom was too important. So I was offered a part ex on a HP2S. Still having my 1100S I was familiar with the boxer engine. The ride was nice but stupidly I compared the bike to my K. It came up short so I didn’t go through with the deal. Big mistake as I sold the K anyway. I just couldn’t appreciate the bike having just ridden the K.
Roll on a few years and I now have a HP2S and it is an amazing bike. I haven’t done that many miles yet so I can’t say much except it is up a rung compared to the R1200S and then some!
So the bike is what it is. Many are faster, many may be better, but few look so nice! I haven’t tried the 9T or the XR yet and I don’t think I want to and then be disappointed possibly in the HP2S.
I plan to get some miles on it this summer for sure.

Good feedback. The XR will be mileage bike for sure. The HP2S will be the toy and maybe occasional track events etc. The XR does everything well except look pretty or have "soul". I have no intentions of getting rid of it as I commute, tour, camp et. al. on it.

HP2S is purely an "I want to have one" bike and it being rare adds to the desire. I have a few days to change my mind so I am doing research and trying to talk myself out of it. Not a lot of forums around it--for obvious reasons.

Buy the HP2 and ride it.......I wouldn't pass up a good one as they are getting harder to come by.
If you don't like it after using it for a bit, then sell it.

I did exactly as Droptarotter suggests, bought an HP2 and have ridden through a set of tires since last July. It’s a hoot, not going to sell any time soon!

That's the plan. I have the trailer set up to go grab it on Saturday and they are holding it with my deposit.

My excuse to the wife is that I can sell it and make my money back if necessary. However, I doubt it will go anywhere any time soon.

I'm stuck on the fact that there's an HP2 Sport, an almost ten year old bike, with just 3000 miles on it. What a shame. The bike deserves to be ridden... well mine anyway, it's not a museum piece.
