High Mileage issues

I'm looking at a 2007 r1200rt with over 200K

Anyone with high mileage can give Me areas to look for and or problem areas of the bikes.

it looks like it has only 40-50k miles on it as far as appearance.

thanks for any and all help.

Charles

that is lots of miles I have them with around 50k and even then they can have problems,
short list common failures r1200xx
ignition coils, check all 4
final drives very common failure,
they will suck valves.
fuel pumps, there is a recall on the fuel flange on the tank
abs system the later style motor brushes fail

other than that clutch and transmission of course
do a leak down compression test, with it hot.

worth picking up, its worth that for the parts.
do a compression check and look at the plugs to see what the oil consumption is like

For $1,200.00 I'd buy it and ride it! Of course it may need maintenance and tires, a battery or other necessary part. Let's say you end up with $2,000.00 in it. Heck, you may ride it for years without any noticiable issues.

I'm sure that there are people on this board that would sell you a nice R1100S for approximately that same price and much lower mileage. It's more of a fun "sports car" - like riding an angry mule versus a hippopotamus

Less than $1,200.00? I am not selling mine for less than that amount or even three times more!

To attain that mileage, very likely items such as coils and 02 sensors have been replaced already, but any documentation supporting such would be bonus.

Suspension and ABS brake components require checking. (Suspension should have been replaced, and likely needs replacing again a second time).

Clutch would have required replacement to reach mileage and likely needs replacing a second time.)

Final drive likely needs replacing if not already performed.

How noisy are the cam chains? An engine teardown can be warranted to fix rattling, sloppy chains/rails at around the 140K and over mark. (Big job.)

How out-of-spec are the throttle bodies?

Decent RT motors are available on EBay.

Really, if you plan on riding such a bike, you're in for quite a bit of wrenching and parts replacements. As a parts bike, most of the mechanical parts on it are likely unsuitable as replacements.

There really comes a time when bikes belong in the boneyard. I've seen my share of others' high-mileage, multiple-issue limpers and always ask the question: why settle for so much less of a motorcycling experience?
