VIN placard
I've moved from MD to NM and VIN inspections here are something. Since my bikes are all modified, some highly modified, I've swapped and modified my R1100S subframes and none of them have the VIN placards anymore.
I need a new VIN placard for my bike to title it here in NM. Any and all real suggestions welcome. If you have a blank VIN placard or two, I'm your buddy...

My HP2Sport does not have a VIN placard and I was able to get a New Mexico title, guess I found an understanding MVD employee.
A better option might be to have the VIN inspected by a certified shop and take that paperwork to MVD. Ask around The ABQ motorcycle shops, given some of the vehicle you see with NM tags there must be a way around not having a placard. A word of caution when applying for a NM drivers license have all your paperwork in order, have witnessed people coming back three and four time before they got it right. The details are on the MVD website. |

Another quick thought, try posting on the Land of Enchantment BMW Club website, someone there might be able to help...

My recently acquired R11S from Texas had a vin placard reissued from Texas Dept of motor vehicles as the subframe was changed at some point during its life in Texas.

I do find it laughable that you got a pass on the plate when one of my bikes CLEARLY had the VIN on the head stock and she "couldn't read it" and kicked me to a police level VIN inspection, which has taken MONTHS to get done. Clearly I lack your good looks and charm...I have to work on my Spanish too...right after I figure out charm school and where to acquire some good looks... '-)

Oh, I'm not in Kansas any more...nor TX...might be the land of enchantment but it's now the land of entrapment when it comes to moving your title over...I'm working something along the placard line now...

I’m not sure how I got my HP2 through without a placard, it certainly wasn’t my good looks! In conversation during the licensing process I mentioned it was one of a couple of hundred in the country and I had looked for the VIN placard before I came and couldn’t find one. We looked together for a placard and a VIN or number on the engine, we didn’t find anything that matched the VIN plate. I had just bought the bike and had ALL the other necessary documents. Licensing was not without a hitch as California DOL did not have my BMW in their computer. My “case” was sent to the Special Projects Office in Santa Fe. Within a week I got a call telling me things were resolved and to return to my local MVD.
When I went to license my KTM I took a flashlight because the VIN on the headstock was difficult to read. When the agent, not the same woman, inspected the placard I mentioned I almost peeled it off when the bike was new. She told me it was very difficult to get a motorcycle licensed in New Mexico without one. New Mexico issues the vehicle title directly from each local office instead of from a central office. Again in conversation with one of the local agents, she told me that if they make a mistake they will be fired on the spot. The drivers license thing was because their previous policy was not in compliance with TCA and Homeland Security. They were threatened with people not being able to fly with only a NM ID. The head of MVD quit last week after criticism of rudeness and incompetence. Maybe things will change, probably not... |

I guess I might have to get a different bike if I move to NM.
My placard was scratched off by thieves when my bike was stolen. |

What I find funny is, I have my valid and verifiable MD title but still require the placard but do not require any kind of inspection to tag the bike and hit the road with it, just proof of insurance. In MD it is just the opposite, I can walk in with JUST a title and pay the fee and tax to move it over but I have to do a full MD vehicle inspection to tag it. Moreover, in MD, i pay the tax on the what I paid for the bike as stated on the title, in NM its blue book which is typically WAY higher, not to mention they hit me up for a fee for not re-titling within 30 days of my arrival in NM....it's a racket....so if you were to buy just a frame for a couple of hundred $, you still have to pay the full boat blue book value even though there's nothing under that frame, license to steel...
