Calling our AZ/NM peeps...

60 or 191?

We are talking from either Globe or Safford up...

Might want to ask some riders in New Mexico BMW Club. You can find their forum here,

Hello Ralf, I'm now a member of the local BMW club in NM if I can help. PM me for anything specific. If you need a place to stay while passing through, PM me.

Going to TOR this year?

The trouble with using 191 is you have to get to Morenci first on 70. Maybe wait till we get to Globe and decide. Rode 191 a few time and once it took 4 hrs. for the 100 miles from Morenci to Alpine because there was sand in every corner.

60 east out of Globe is a great ride through the Salt River Canyon and into Show Low. If you're not in a rush, a diversion on 73 through the White River Apache Reservation is scenic and little travelled. 60 is a popular vacation route from the Valley to the high country and thus heavily patrolled.

191 is famous for it's nearly 100 miles of never-ending twisties. The road condition is vastly improved since the Wallow fire 6 or so years ago. Tar snakes can be slippery on a hot day. Many feel the road is more enjoyable going north. Views of the eastern AZ and western NM landscape as you cross from one side of the spine to the other are not to be missed. It does require a certain amount of focus. It is a bit farther from Globe and 70 east can be a bit boring. Our local riding group makes it a point to ride it at least 2-3 times a year.

As an aside, Three Forks Road leading west off 191 toward Big Lake, just a few miles north of Alpine, and continuing northerly on 273 or 261 is one of my all-time favorite rides, and another reason to take the 191 route.
