Nate Ridden S1000RR Slams CCS

I was up at Atlanta BMW today and was advised that Nate won all his races last weekend. I saw the bike and it has obviously been run hard. Nate will prolly be there for the open house Saturday.

BTW, Atlanta BMW has a S1000RR in motorsports color with the usual add-ons for MSRP. Someone backed out of the deal.

Nate Kern Big Winner In South Carolina!

Just got a call from our pal Nate Kern, heading home after a super productive weekend at Carolina Motorsports Park in Kershaw, S.C. Nate won seven races out of seven entered on the potent S1000RR: GTO, Unlimited Supersport (grooved DOT tires), Unlimited Superbike and Unlimited GP. Many of the bikes there were full race-prepped AMA level race bikes.

Nate’s bike had the Dwayne McCracken-prepped TTX Ohlins shock and 30 mil. Ohlins cartridges, set up three separate times by Dwayne until he had the gnarly, bumpy track surface dialed. Dwayne is very well-known in serious race circuits and has worked the Isle Of Man races for many seasons. Nate is a lucky man to have made such an illustrious friend! Dwayne was recently with Corona Extra Honda, and riders Neil Hodgson, Jake Holden and Matt Lynn. Then, Honda dropped out of AMA Racing and Dwayne has opened a business in Cummings, Ga. called MPH Motorsports.

The RR dyno’ed at 191 rear wheel horsepower on pump gas, and was basically stock engine-wise. Nate jumped the first start, got a stop and go penalty, and still won the race by several seconds, catching the lead pack of four riders for the GTO win. He said that the interest level from BMW’s new selected demographic (ages 20-32 years) was phenomenal! Support was by the stalwart pros at BMW Motorcycles Of Atlanta (Hi, Lynda!). The excitement generated by the RR is incredible. BMW has hit their mark.

There were many racers down, evacuated by chopper due to the composition of the track surface. I heard something about a concrete ramp that leads onto the track at a 4th gear corner, with a raised concrete lip that caught several unawares. Nate was able to ride at 90%, because when he rode full-blast, he folded the front slightly at 90 MPH and that put his heart right in his throat. Vortex Sprockets went out of their way to get Nate a 1 tooth larger sprocket for the rear, which added 800 rpm to the top end and he was able to carry 3rd gear in a corner usually reserved for 2nd gear.

The TTX shock saved his tire budget for the weekend, allowing the tires to go much farther than normal, and these are by no means cheap tires - Pirellis all. Nate started running 1:41, but with Duane’s help he turned 1:32’s, and maybe a CCS track record there in S.C. Nate raced the entire race in Slick mode - electronics turned off (don't try this at home!). Duane McCracken rebuilt the fork three times, making it stiffer and stiffer until it was perfect for the track conditions, finally settling on the ultra stiff 112 springs.
Heavy braking and bumpy conditions made this choice, so the back could stay planted, and Nate was able to check out! His closest competitor was 2.6 seconds back.

Our old pal Eric Helmsbach of N.J. (who used to race Ducati in the Moto ST series where Nate and I first met back in ’06) is now on a BMW of Manhattan RR, basically stock, and ran the two hour endurance race SOLO, and won it in Sport mode! Both Nate and Eric have full Akrapovic exhaust systems installed, but the rest of the engine is stock. What a weekend for BMW in South Carolina, USA! Well done, guys. This was all scribbled during a fast phone call, so please forgive any glaring faux pas.
