2001 Z 3 Key problems

I have two push button keys , both keys unlock the car manually neither remote key works properly
Key 1 works most of the time when very close to the car , sometimes works at distance , often not at all !
Key 2 simply will not work remotely , ever
The panic button on both keys does not work
I have replaced the battery , both keys red flashing LED work
I have done the key reset mumbo jumbo described in the owners manual several times ,with no results.
No idea if the alarm will work , no idea how to test it .
All suggestions welcome

Talking Z3 key problems

I had key problems . Eventually they solved themselves
Key 1 woke up after I changed the key battery and charged the car battery to capacity .
Key 2 , even with a new battery ,resisted all attempts to activate it using any of the many procedures I found on the internet .
This morning I tried the procedure in the owners manual , yet again , and BINGO the key now works perfectly every time .
Have no idea why this procedure worked after many failed attempts .

Z3 key problems

The gremlins have returned !
The Owners Handbook procedure to program keys works , well sort of .
I can have either Key 1 lock and unlock remotely , and Key 2 inoperative , OR Key2 working with Key 1 inoperative.
I can't program both keys to lock the car remotely .
Any suggestions ?? it's driving me crazy
