Z3 jumps out of 1st gear
Hi
My 1998 Z3 1.9 16 valve jumps out of 1st gear every now and again. The car has only done 75000 miles. It just does it when pulling away, it wont jump out as you drive and only does it perhaps once in every 100 miles. I changed the oil and it was really black. Is it likely to be a linkage problem or the gearbox its self. Thanks in advance |

It could be a linkage problem or also a transmission / rubber engine mount problem. When the trans & engine mounts age, they may sag or crack thus re-orienting the location of the transmission relative to the shifter linkage. Hence first gear may not be "in" all the way or the shift lever may actually be contacting the edge of the transmission tunnel through which it pokes. Similarly, worn selector shaft pivots & the rear shifter rubber mount may also be worn, preventing full engagement.
If these components are all in good condition, then I might suspect a gearbox problem. Good Luck! ![]() Schneller Michael Morris Schneller BMW Performance 26 Middle Rd Unit 1-2 Newbury, MA 01951 USA 978.465.2002
