Exhaust Manifold

I'm in the middle of head gasket on my 99 Z3 coupe 2.8L M52TU

Any one have hints to get at the exhaust manifold nuts especially on the rear manifold?

After 5 hours and only getting the front manifold almost out, I'm thinking I must be missing something!?

Is it possible to remove the head with the manifolds attached?
