clunking

i have a 2001 z3....automatic 3.0....engine is silky smooth...transmission too
during acceleration silky smooth....breaking silky smooth...but at very slow speeds just before stopping i hear a clunk...not multiple clunking or clunks...just one clunk...the clunk is consistent...52,000 miles.....advice needed on possible causes.

Have the same issue on my 02 with 59k mi. Clunk at slow speed and here's a typical scenario when it occurs:

1. Drive across a parking lot,
2. Car shifts to 2nd,
3. Immediately or shortly after entering 2nd let off gas,
4. Car slows and shifts to first... Loud clunk or clank, seems to come from tranny or drivetrain.

I had something in the drivetrain bind the other day when I turned into a business at slow speed, about 5mph...wasn't the tranny, and seemed to come from mid to rear of the car. The car jolted and then it was fine. It's not my daily driver, but I've driven it about 150 miles since the last event. Like you, outside this issue, it's smooth. Mine is so random and infrequent, I haven't really started troubleshooting yet, but I did check the differential bracket and it was fine. Next might be to check the driveshaft support and u-joints.

Keep posting updates as I'm sure this is a common issue between us and other owners with this configuration: 3.0 (mine has sport mode) with steptronic trans. It's fully loaded and all factory.
