2000 Boxster S rear wheel bearings
I have a 2000 Boxster S with about 71,000 miles. For the past year or so, I’ve been getting an increasingly loud rumble coming from the rear of the car that's not related to engine RPM or tires and the volume increases with speed.
I jacked up the car today and confirmed there is no bearing play on either side when you shake the wheels. There's also no noticeable bearing vibration or sound on the left wheel when you spin it by hand. The right wheel however has a noticeably rougher feel when you spin it and makes a low rumble sound. So I’m pretty sure the right-side rear wheel bearing is the cause of my “road noise” problem. Based on the estimate I got, there’s no cost advantage to having both bearings replaced at the same time. Therefore, I'm considering just having the right bearing replaced now and replace the left when/if it starts making noise. I’m interested in opinions/experience if this makes sense and how long it might be before I'll need to replace the left bearing. Thx |

You may never have to replace the other bearing, or it could start howling next week. There is now way of knowing.
