Porsche Crest Driver-Side Door Lock

My key fob never worked when I acquired my 1999 Boxster
so I open and lock the car using the key.

Well I went to unlock the car yesterday, and expect to feel the usual
resistance, and hear the normal muffled click of the door arrester
latching but...

I barely felt any resistance, a faint click and the door did unlock.
However I can now turn the key in the cylinder to the left and right
without any resistance, and can't lock [or unlock] the door using the key.

It's not the lock actuator as the doors do click/locked
when I start moving. I rolled down the window and couldn't
open the door from the outside.

I'm assuming it's just the cylinder. Anyone have the same or similar issue?
What did you end up doing?

Hope someone has had the same experience or can help me pinpoint the problem
before I take the door apart.
