newer car
have run a 97 boxster, up to 260,000 k,s, am now thinking of a newer car, boxster- cayman. am concerned about cylinder scoring on newer cars. going to a 2009, would help avoid the dreaded ims problem, but now the scoring ???

I don't think bore scoring is all that prevalent but gets a lot of pub on the Internet, just like IMS. The research I've seen on it shows that certain circumstances had to be met to increase the chance of scoring - running the engine hard while it is still cold or under certain hard driving conditions on the track. Can scoring happen? Absolutely, but probably not as often as people want you to believe. Various outlets have an interest in promoting problems and see those problems day after day. They want you to believe these problems are eminent, but they're not. These outlets don't see the hundreds of thousands of Porsches that represent 90-95% that are running just fine.
The good news is bore scoring can be detected in its early stages, unlike an IMS issue. A quality PPI can do a cylinder check and determine if scoring exists. Don't let it freak you out or make you lose sleep at night. Do your due diligence and you'll be fine.
