Battery

2003 Porsche 986 3.2 S
Can you take the battery out over winter to save keep charging it up, or will it mess up the ecu or electrics in the car

Sure you can take it out. You may or may not need a code to 'unlock' your radio if you disconnect the battery and then reconnect the battery later. The code should be in your owner's manual. Or you may not need a code at all. Not sure when Porsche went away from needing radio codes.

Just don't close the hood without the battery!

One trick is to click the latch in the hood to closed while you have the hood open. Then gently drop it to the hood loop in the car. Having the latch closed before you put it down prevents the hood from latching.

An '03 probably needs a code reset for the radio. I take my battery out for storage (06 Cayman) but place a small towel between the hood and the latch to make sure it doesn't latch closed when I put the cover on. Also, make sure you drop your windows a little. You need to simulate the window drop that occurs when you start opening the door handle.
As far as the code goes, if you don't have it, you can contact the dealer, give them your VIN and they should be able to give you a couple of codes to try.

Why not out a battery tender on it?
I bought 5 of them on Amazon for $12 each now all of my cars have them hard wired to the battery with the connections in the front bumper grills so I just have to pull them into my shop in the respective spots and plug them in. No more jumping cars that may sit for a few months between driving(except when I’m lazy and/or forget to plug them in)
