Hi All,
New 987.1 owner here. I have done simple stuff on my previous 87 Targa up to oil return tubes, brakes, targa top, sway bars etc. I don't plan on doing much on the Boxster except routine maintenance and brakes, etc. I don't know yet whether I will even track the car. I have a good Craftsman floor jack and stands and 6 hockey pucks on the way. I was looking at Liftbars for $325. The guy who sold me the 987 just offered me his Quickjack BL-5000SLX for $900, delivered. Also Costco has the BL-7000SLX on sale for $1249! Stick with what I have, LiftBars, or get the quickJack? "Help me Obi-wan, you're my only hope!"

Personally I'd go with the Quickjack for that price, if it's in good shape. I've considered the liftbars also. I think with the liftbars you will be going back and forth from side to side to get it up as high as the Quickjack.

Let me add to the confusion - buy a pair of Jack Point jack stands. You only need 2, not 4. Lift the rear with the jack point, jack it high enough so the fronts come off the ground and use a regular jack stand on the front.

Im in the same biat. I bought a long reach low profile jack and jack stands from Harbor Freight yesterday but am rethinking the purchase. I had considered the Costco QJ but the $1249 price is steep. What's a Jackpoint stand?

So I passed on the QuickJack, I just could not justify the cost for the amount of work I would be/am capable of doing. I have not made any other decisions other than to think about how much I was able to do on my Targa with just a jack and stands...

I talked to the owner at Jackpoint today. I'm looking for a solution that would work for all of my vehicles (full size pick up, SUV, Jeep Wrangler and Boxster). He said he tested his jack stands up to 10,000 on each. No buckling but still, he can only say legally that his product is rated at 2000 lb per stand.I
I've passed on the QJ too but the JP stands might work for me as long as there's a way to elevate them for use under my truck. Like you, I used 2 ton jack stands and a $60 jack for years for my SC Targa and '87 Carrera coupe. But I was younger then. |

OMG get the quick jack, for years I would jack it up and it’s so frustrating the only “correct” jack locations are the jack points. I got a quick jack on sale at Costco and drained my brakes that day, all the while wondering why I ever went through the pain of jacking 4 points...

So my friend’s lift is occupied while he puts a supercharger in his ‘Stang (whatever... ;-). ).
Not to disrespect Porken but it seems like making liftbars facsimiles would be easy with some square tubing. Am I oversimplifying or missing some critical safety thing?

When I bought my set of QJ's I had some misgivings about the cost.
After using them on both of my P Car's, I have no regrets about the purchase price. So far they have worked for about 99% of the stuff I have wanted to do. There is nothing nicer than having a car about two feet off the ground and being able to slide a 5 gallon bucket under the oil drain plug. No mess, splash, etc. Plus if you are working on a front engine car and don't want to bend so far over, just raise it up and make life a lot easier. |
