Need help identifying two air intake tubes
 

This is for a 2003 Tiptronic Boxster S

I am hoping to put a new cold air intake tube in and notice these two fittings that connect to the tube. Many after market tubes do not contain holes for these fittings. I think that the larger fitting is for a resonator and can be detached with no ill effect. Is this true? The smaller tube that fits in the intake tube is unknown to me. Does anyone know what this tube is for?
