LED puddle lights for my 987.2 S - a step by step how to
So - first off - the light that is located at the bottom trailing edge of our car doors is sometimes referred to as puddle lights. The 987 & 986 series Boxsters & Cayman's have a traditional light bulb in them, vs, the newer cars that are equipped with LED lights.
Of course, being the nerd that I am, I decided to see if I could retrofit an LED puddle light in my car. After some youtube searching, I sourced a set from Amazon with the Porsche logo on it. So - here's the play by play: 1. You can pry out the old light with a screwdriver -- but be careful, push too hard, and the plastic will snap. (Don't ask how I know this!). The old unit just unplugs from a light bulb connector: The new LED connections are different, and will require an adapter wire. I believe it is a 2.0 mm JST or XH connector. (I had a pair that came with a puddle light conversion I did on my MINI Cooper, but didn't need the adapter wire) Here's a close-up of the connection on the new light unit: The wire: Used these heat-shrink connectors that fit perfectly into the housing in the door: Here's what the new unit looks like, all ready to go: Clipped to the door. I had to use a razor blade to lengthen the opening for the new unit, since it was slightly larger than the original. Snaps right in, and projects a nice image: Here's the Youtube video that I found to get all the info I needed: (That is not me in the video!): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nt7yj7jbvK4
