'06 Cayman problems?

Hi all,
I'm new to this forum. I have an opportunity to buy a very nice '06 Cayman.
Is the IMS issue affect this year, or has it gone away? Any other issue I should be aware of?
Thanks.

The IMS in a 2006 is the non serviceable type, meaning it cannot be changed without tearing down the engine.

Is the IMS in an '06 an improved version over the previous ones that gave so much problems?
Thanks.

Three generations of IMS bearings. The '06 has the third. The worst was the second. Relatively few failures reported but rubbing parts wear...

Thanks all!

As others stated the IMS Bearing is going to be one of the biggest service items to be addressed. We sell LN Engineering's solution for it but can a labor intensive job.
Additionally check out our 987 Tech Articles for helpful guides on common Cayman maintenance.

WRONG, the IMS Bearing will require zero servicing. It is not serviceable.

Cheers

Actually, LN has a conversion kit for these engines, requires pulling it apart to install, but afterwards it is serviceable.;)

Yes, but the bearing suffers an incredibly low failure rate. As the motor needs to be pulled apart, it it is not a "service" item. Lol. You are far more likely to suffer a scored cylinder or rod bearing failure. That can be fixed by pulling the motor apart as well, but not considered "servicable" either...

I wonder what has the higher rate of failure, early replacement small bearings (single or dual row) or the OE larger bearing in the 2005.5 motors onwards?

We install plenty of LN Engineering bearings and Solutions, and we like them. But not sure I am sold on replacing a large reliable bearing with a smaller serviceable one... Yes, the Solution would be an upgrade. But there are bearings of the same dimensions available as the original with far higher load capacities as well.

YMMV

Cheers
