Crankshaft bearing case.

I removed the engine from my 1997 Boxster M96/20 for the old IMS bearing thingy...only had the car a few weeks...I have all new bearings bolts etc. but I,m having big problems with my crank bearing case...checked the oil clearances 002" bit tight but OK...so started to rebuild the 2 case halves...checked the end float...NONE...checked the thrust washers plus the web & they are exactly the same as the width if the bearing on the crank...only 1 size of thrust washer...do I have to set my gap 004" by rubbing the washers on emery paper...secondly...when I torque all 14 bolts to 20 lb/ft...the crank turns, but does not spin...when I angle torque, the 90 degree, in the proper sequence, on 12 bolts of the bolts the crank still turns, when I torque 13/14 the crank locks solid...what am doing wrong.

Crankshaft bearing case.

On further investigation after stripping the crankcase again I find I have assembly oil & fluid seeping out from under the join between the steel insert & the aluminium outer casing on 6 off the bearing journals...to me it looks like the steel insert has parted from the ally casting...anyone else had this problem ?

I guess I don’t understand what’s you are trying to do and why you’ve disassembled the engine. Did your IMS fail?

I said in my first post that I stripped the engine to replace the IMS...then found the other problem with the crank cases.

Yes, I see that. Asking why. Did the IMS fail? are you replacing with a new factory part? None of the aftermarket pieces require disassembly.

The IMS did not fail...but would only have lasted a couple of thousand miles & then disaster...I have been a master mechanic for 50 years & knew there was a problem in my engine...so the question I asked...has anyone had problems with the steel insert separating from the alloy crank housing...I intend to use welding flaw detection sprays to determine the extent of the separation...my engine is an Porsche AT replacement so has had previous problems.

Can you post a picture of what you are trying to describe? Despite your experience, I am having a hard time understanding the issue you are facing. I would like to help, we build a lot of these engines, but I really don't get what you are saying...

Cheers
