Coolant Change necessary??
I have a 2006 Boxster S with 150000 Kilometres (approx 90000 miles)
It has the original G-12 pink coolant. The coolant looks clean and fairly clear. No particles or discolouration. I have changed the water pump once a few years ago but poured the coolant that came out back into the coolant tank.I made sure the catch tray was clean and used a fine filter when pouring it back in. This was at approx 110000 kilometres and no issues with leaks anywhere since. I have not checked the ph of the fluid as no one in my area carries the test strips. Should I just keep driving it? I called 2 dealers which I dont use lol,one states to change at 7 years other says no change necessary if fluid still appears pink and clear. Worth noting is I had to change the water pump on my 05 Toyota Rav 4 at 165000 kilometres ,it was original and had a red Oats Toyota coolant in it which still looked pretty good BUT I decided to change the thermostat also and when I removed it was rusted pretty good.So I guess the anti rust chemicals in the fluid were no longer working.Im not sure if the Toyota Red from back then is the same as the Porsche G-12. The Porsche stuff definitely feels slimy and thick.I think there's something in it to helpl lubricate the water pump bearing seals .Any advise would be great. |

"Lifetime" coolant usually last around 5-6 years, and ages like oil and needs to be changed. How it looks is irrelevant, and if you lack the tools to properly test it, changing it is your best option.

Hey moresquirt,
We do sell a few different Coolant testing devices and strips on the site. A coolant change isn't that expensive though and is not a bad idea for peace of mind. |
